2 Methods to Search for Files in CentOS 8

locate command

“Locate” is the command that can be used to find a specific file on your CentOS computer. You just run it by typing “locate [filename]” and you will get what you want.

Sometimes, the “locate” command might cause errors on CentOS 8. To solve this issue, you need to install mlocate using a command line tool.

Sometimes certain commands in Linux are not installed by default or available out of box and may create some problems for users when trying to use them. In these cases it is important that one installs any missing tools before starting their work with Linux so they can avoid many issues later down the road during your time working with production servers.

One such example of an installation error would be if someone were attempting to execute “sudo locate” which displays all files within specific directories whose names match user-given criteria where none existed previously yet still gave output saying access was denied.

sudo dnf install mlocate

Then update CentOS’s database to aboid confliciton.

sudo updatedb

On the screen, you will see a message indicating that your database has been updated. You are now ready to begin using ‘locate’ command to search for specific files within your terminal.

locate filename

The command line is really simple. You just need to pass a part of the file name of what you want to search for.

find command

The find command is useful for finding files on the CentOS system. You can also use it to locate a file that you are looking for, just like how we used the “locate” command before.

find -name FileName
