It is hard to tell what the best male character from classic RPGs is. After all, each character has its own characteristics and capabilities. However, a good male character can definitely transpose into the player’s style. As a player, you want your male character to be handsome, brave, powerful, honorable, and so on. With all these, some names do stand up in the crowd.
Crono – Chrono Trigger (1995)
At a first glance, a hero who never speaks is less likely to become one of your favorites. But Crono (the main protagonist from Chrono Trigger) can prove that actions are more important than words.
His blade leaves no enemy behind, but his courage is also underlined by his sacrifices and altruism. To many players, this is the classic hero. He saves princesses, prevents disasters, and does not back off from sacrificing himself for humankind. What else can you ask for?
Commander Shepard – Mass Effect Series (2007-2012)
Commander Shepard is the Citadel hero for Mass Effect Series fans. There is no doubt that he makes a perfect male character. He has both words and actions. Once you end up controlling this character, you want to be part of him.
You want to follow him and actually do your best to succeed. However, he is not the friendly type. At some point or another, his charisma makes him unsupportable, whether it comes to his friends or allies. Other than that, his leadership skills bring in one victory after another.
Jon Irenicus – Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000)
A leading male character does not necessarily have to be a positive one. Sure, most negative characters are alike, but some villains can definitely draw some attention. Jon Irenicus is not the type of villain who kills people for fun and entertainment. He does not do it for the money either. Although the story of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn starts with him torturing you, you learn that he has become evil due to his love for a woman. You want to get rid of him, but you also feel sorry for him. He is just too intriguing to be overlooked.
Stocke – Radiant Historia (2011)
Stocke is the type of RPG male character who gives you a well-deserved peace of mind, regardless of where he is sent. He is sent out to kill everyone in all kinds of missions. The funny thing is that he never knows who he will lead.
No matter what kind of team he ends up with, he needs to inspire confidence and courage before things degenerate. Given his characteristics, he makes a great leader. His responsibilities go up with every new mission, yet he pulls it off all the time. With these ideas in mind, Stocke is the type of leader who you are never afraid with.
Neku Sakuraba – The World Ends With You (2008)
Neku Sakuraba is the type of male character who keeps growing with every new mission. He is involuntarily teamed up with Shiki Misaki. However, the two have to learn how to cooperate. The character gains strength and skills as he grows up.
You may not necessarily like him at first. After all, he is a jerk when you meet him. He is selfish, but quite evil too. He is far from the good heroes you are used to. As he gains new skills, Neku Sakuraba becomes quite charismatic, but he also underlines a heroic attitude.
Hiro – Lunar: Eternal Blue (1995)
Hiro is the old-fashioned hero who leads. He does exactly what you might expect from a hero. He is not the type with a dramatic past, a funky hairstyle, a mysterious aura, or a secret lifestyle.
Instead, he is the young and adventurous type who would help anyone because he likes it. His adventure through Blue Spire exposes him to all kinds of happenings and characters. He fights, helps, works, and falls in love – all these to save the world.
Nier – Nier (2010)
Nier is the type of RPG male character who you would bow to in real life. His entire life is dedicated to his daughter, but without altering his overall integrity. Whether he did it with his daughter in mind or for the ones around him, Nier protected his village and tried his best to turn the world to 180 degrees.
Everything floats around his daughter though. The hero has to rescue her from some harmful creatures. Going through this adventure by his side will boost your family spirit as well.
Ethan Mars – Heavy Rain (2010)
Family guys seem to gain plenty of loyalty in RPGs and Ethan Mars makes no exception either. His mission in Heavy Rain is fairly simple – he needs to do whatever it takes to rescue his kidnapped son. The story begins with a beautiful family – a married man and two kids.
After a series of unhappy events, he ends up with one son only – and he gets kidnapped. The love for his family is exquisite, not to mention the tasks – cutting his own fingers, poisoning himself, and so on. With these challenges in mind, no other male RPG character can inspire your family sense so deeply.
Zidane Tribal – Final Fantasy IX (2000)
Each leading role in the Final Fantasy series has specific and unique characteristics. Most of them have one thing in common though – they tend to become lonely. Zidane Tribal makes it even more obvious since he likes to destroy things and kidnap princesses.
“Oooh, soft”! No Final Fantasy IX player can forget this moment. However, as you go through his story, the character befriends random characters and learns from everyone. The game underlines the metamorphosis of a cheap thief into a real leader.
Auron – Final Fantasy X (2001)
Auron is not the type of hero who leaves nothing evil behind. Instead, he is the type of mentor who aims to prepare you for whatever is about to happen.
His role? Saving Spira’s citizens. Unlike many other heroes, he dies, but his spirit persists through death, only to keep an eye on his son and provide guidance as a mentor and guardian.
