How to Fix Cameras Not Connecting to the SwitchBot AI Hub

💻 Device: SwitchBot AI Hub 🗓 Added

Causes

  • The camera model is not supported by the AI Hub — only the SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam Plus 2K, Pan/Tilt Cam Plus 3K, Outdoor Pan/Tilt Cam 3K, and Smart Video Doorbell can be registered with the AI Hub. Other SwitchBot camera models (and most non-RTSP consumer cameras) will never appear as addable devices, no matter how many times you try to pair them — the AI Hub's camera section simply doesn't offer them.
  • RTSP is not enabled, or no Camera Account has been created — every camera that feeds the AI Hub needs RTSP turned on with a username and password. On SwitchBot cameras this means enabling the Camera Account: if you skip creating an account, the hub cannot authenticate to the camera stream and the add fails. Third-party cameras also require RTSP support and valid credentials, or the hub will reject the stream URL.
  • The camera and AI Hub are on different networks — the hub discovers and streams from cameras over your local network. If the AI Hub is on your main 2.4 GHz SSID while the camera sits on a guest network, a separate IoT SSID, or the 5 GHz band with AP/client isolation enabled, they can't see each other and the camera never connects.
  • A VPN or ad-blocker on your phone blocks local discovery — camera setup on the AI Hub routes through the SwitchBot app on your phone. If a VPN, private DNS relay, or network-level ad blocker is active on the phone, local device discovery fails and the app reports the camera can't be added — a commonly reported gotcha that looks like a hardware fault but is purely a network setting on your phone.
  • Too many cameras are already loaded on the hub — the AI Hub supports up to 8 cameras, but each added stream consumes CPU and NPU resources. With several 2K streams running, adding another camera can fail or the new stream stutters because the hub's video pipeline is saturated.

How to Fix

  1. Confirm your camera is on the supported list — check the model: Pan/Tilt Cam Plus 2K, Pan/Tilt Cam Plus 3K, Outdoor Pan/Tilt Cam 3K, or Smart Video Doorbell. If it's a different SwitchBot camera or a non-RTSP consumer camera, it cannot be added to the AI Hub — this is a hard compatibility limit, not a pairing fault.
  2. Update the app and the camera firmware — the AI Hub requires SwitchBot App version 9.20 or newer. In the app, open the camera's page → Settings → Firmware Update and install the latest camera firmware, then restart the camera. Outdated firmware is a frequent cause of failed registration.
  3. Create a Camera Account (enable RTSP) on each camera — open the camera's page in the SwitchBot app → gear icon → More Features → Camera Account, toggle Camera Account on, then tap Account Info to create a username and password. This is the account the AI Hub uses to pull the RTSP stream. If you haven't created it, selecting the camera in the AI Hub will bounce you to this screen — complete it, then try registering again.
  4. Add the camera from the AI Hub page — go to the AI Hub's page in the app, tap the camera addition icon in the bottom menu bar, then tap the "+" on the left side of the camera to save it. For third-party RTSP cameras, tap the manual add option and enter the camera's RTSP URL plus the username/password you created, for example rtsp://user:[email protected]:554/stream1.
  5. Put the hub and camera on the same network — make sure both devices are on the same router and same subnet, ideally the same SSID and band. In your router settings, disable AP/client isolation, and if you use separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect the hub and camera to the same one.
  6. Disable VPN and private DNS on your phone, then retry — turn off any VPN, private DNS (like ad-blocking DNS profiles), and Wi-Fi privacy features on the phone running the SwitchBot app, then attempt the camera add again. This is the fix that resolves most "camera won't connect" cases where the hardware is fine.
  7. Wait 3 minutes after pairing or a hub restart — after the AI Hub is paired with a camera or rebooted, all services take up to 3 minutes to fully load. Trying to view or add streams during that window fails confusingly. Wait, then refresh the AI Hub page in the app.
  8. Reduce camera load or contact support — if you're running close to the 8-camera limit, remove a camera you don't need and retry. If a supported camera still won't connect, contact SwitchBot via App → Profile → Support → Feedback with your app version and camera model — they can check whether the registration failed server-side.
