Causes

  • Default color mode and brightness lifting the image — the VG27AQ comes out of the box in its brightest, most saturated picture modes (often the vivid/Racing preset with brightness near 90). That boost crushes contrast and makes colors look pale and washed out, especially text and skin tones, because the panel's backlight is being driven at maximum with an aggressive gamma lift.
  • Wrong RGB range or color depth negotiated over the cable — over HDMI, many GPUs default to a limited 16–235 RGB range while the monitor expects full 0–255, which flattens blacks and washes the whole image. A DisplayPort link bumped down to 8-bit instead of the panel's supported 10-bit can likewise drop gradient and saturation fidelity. This is the most common reason a VG27AQ that looked great in a review looks pale on your desk.
  • HDR toggled on for SDR content — if HDR is enabled in Windows while you are watching non-HDR content, the VG27AQ (an HDR10-capable but modest-brightness IPS panel) is forced into an HDR tone-mapping path that lifts gamma and desaturates ordinary content. How to Fix

  1. Switch to the correct picture mode and lower brightness — press the menu/joystick button and open Image → Picture Mode. Then lower Brightness to roughly 60–75 and set Contrast to 80; the aggressive out-of-box boost is a large part of the pale appearance.
  2. Force full RGB and the right color depth in the GPU panel — in the NVIDIA Control Panel (or AMD Adrenalin) under Change resolution, set the output dynamic range / pixel format to RGB Full (0–255) and select the highest supported color depth (10-bit / bpc) at 144–165Hz. In Windows Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, confirm the VG27AQ is at its native 2560x1440. An RGB Full and 10-bit setting removes the flat blacks and gradient banding that read as washed-out color.
  3. Turn HDR off for SDR content — in Windows Settings → System → Display → HDR, set Use HDR to Off unless you are actually viewing HDR content. Keeping HDR enabled on the desktop is the most common single cause of a milky, washed image on this monitor. Only toggle it on when playing/streaming native HDR, and disable it again after.
  4. Tune color temperature and saturation from the OSD — open Image → Color Temp and pick the temperature that looks neutral to you (6500K/Normal is the accurate baseline) instead of the boosted presets. Check the saturation settings are at stock rather than lifted. If skin tones look off, confirm you are not using a mode with an aggressive Skin Tone preset.
  5. Load a known-good calibration profile — for the most accurate result, calibrate with a colorimeter (an i1/Spyder) and save an ICC profile; for a quick no-hardware win, search for a user-shared VG27AQ .icc calibration profile and load it via Windows Color Management. This corrects the gray balance and gamma that make colors look pale without touching the OSD.
  6. Confirm against the panel's actual gamut — after the steps above, view the image from a normal seated angle. If colors still look less vivid than a specific other monitor you own, that is the Panel difference between sRGB and wide-gamut screens — not a fixable fault.
