Causes
- IPS panel edge light leaking around the bezel — the VG27AQ is an IPS panel lit by a row of edge backlights, so some light inevitably bleeds around the edges where the panel meets the bezel. Mild bleed is a trait of the IPS technology rather than a defect, but the VG27AQ's brighter 350 cd/m² typical backlight makes low-level edge glow more noticeable than on dimmer panels, especially in dark scenes.
- Manufacturing variance in the panel used in each unit — ASUS sources panels for the VG27AQ from different batches, and IP-glow / corner-bleed differs noticeably from unit to unit. Two VG27AQs from the same production line can look very different on a black screen, so what reads as a fault on yours may be within the tolerance of the panel ASUS fitted to it.
- The panel was clamped or shipped under load — the monitor ships with foam blocks around the corners, but if the unit was transported or handed over with the panel pressed unevenly (a strap around the screen, pressure on a corner in a bag), the IPS liquid-crystal layer and bezel can be disturbed, worsening localized bleed in one corner or edge.
- Brightness/Saturation pushed up in a dark room — running the VG27AQ at high brightness in a dim room inflates any bleed because the eye adapts to the dark and every bit of edge glow becomes obvious. This is the most common self-inflicted reason owners think they have a bad panel when the monitor is actually within spec.
- A mount or stand pressing unevenly on the frame — bolting the VG27AQ to a VESA arm that pulls unevenly on the mount points, or over-tightening the stand bracket, can flex the frame and force additional light through a determined edge or corner.
How to Fix
- Tell backlight bleeding apart from IPS glow — the VG27AQ shows two similar effects: IPS glow moves with your viewing angle (brightness shifts as you lean side to side), while real backlight bleeding stays fixed in the same corners no matter where you sit. Sit dead-center about arm's length away; if the bright corners slide around as you move your head, that is normal IPS glow. Only fixed, unmoving edge/spot light is bleed worth acting on.
- Lower the VG27AQ's brightness and run a bleed test — press the menu/joystick button, open Image → Brightness and bring it down (many users run 60–70 for day and lower at night). Set the panel to a near-black image, aim a camera at the screen at a fixed position, and take a photo — a static photo is the standard way to judge and document bleed rather than eyeballing it in a dark room.
- Gently loosen the VESA mount or stand bracket — if the monitor is on an arm, loosen the four VESA screws a half-turn each so the mount is not pulling a corner toward or away from the panel, then re-tighten lightly and evenly. If it is on the stock stand, make sure it is clicked into the V-shape base squarely. Uneven frame pressure is one cause of added corner bleed.
- Relieve case/bezel press-fit stress — backlight bleed from assembly stress is sometimes reduced by gently pressing around the bezel away from the bright corner (never hard). This can re-seat a slightly-sprung panel edge. Stop immediately if it makes the bleed worse, and never do this while the panel is on full brightness.
- Update firmware and reset the OSD — check ASUS's support page for the VG27AQ for a newer firmware that may tune backlight behavior, and from the OSD choose System → Reset to restore factory defaults (an odd ECO/color profile can raise apparent brightness and worsen the look of bleed). Re-apply just the lower brightness setting afterward.
- Get a warranty swap if bleed is severe — what matters is bleed visible during normal, seated, non-dark-room use at reasonable brightness. If one corner or edge is obviously glowing in normal day use, contact ASUS support under the display's warranty and request a replacement — this is the reliable path for genuinely bad panels, since bleed can't be fully fixed in software.
