Bloomberg reports the base M6 MacBook Pro will ship this fall wearing Apple's current chassis, not the long-awaited redesign, while the company quietly works on cheaper memory options to blunt the RAM price crisis. It is a rare split: new silicon on day one, new looks deferred to the M7 generation.
The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is expected to arrive roughly a year after the M5 model debuted in October 2025, putting a late-2026 launch firmly in the window. It will carry the M6, Apple's first 2-nanometer chip built on TSMC's N2 process, with memory bandwidth climbing to around 200GB/s from 153GB/s on the M5.
The Redesign Waits for M7
Anyone holding out for the OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro will wait until 2027. Bloomberg's roadmap puts the redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro in the first half of next year, riding the M7 family rather than the M6. The same planning that cancelled the M6 Pro and M6 Max shifts the high-end chassis work to the AI-focused M7 generation.
That makes the base M6 MacBook Pro a bridge product: fresh silicon in a familiar shell. Apple is testing the machine with a 12-core GPU configuration, up from the 10-core M5, paired with an upgraded Neural Engine tuned for on-device AI workloads. Video encode and decode blocks get improvements too, and the WMCM packaging pulls the CPU, GPU, DRAM, and Neural Engine closer together for lower latency.
Cheaper RAM Becomes a Strategy
The redesign delay is partly a memory story. Soaring DRAM prices driven by the AI data-center buildout forced Apple to raise Mac and iPad prices by up to $300 in June, and a fully loaded MacBook Pro now crosses the $10,000 mark. Apple's answer runs on two tracks.
Track one is the MacBook Neo. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple is testing a second-generation Neo with the A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB, plus periodic color refreshes. The budget Mac that launched at $599, and now sells at $699, becomes the affordable-RAM vehicle for the lineup.
Track two is supply. Apple has floated using cheaper Chinese memory chips as an escape valve for the RAM price crisis, a move the US government is discouraging but not yet forbidding. Either way, the signal is clear: Apple treats memory costs as a strategic problem, not a temporary blip.
Market context explains the timing. Apple's third-quarter earnings showed iPhone and Mac sales growing despite the shortage, while global PC shipments slipped 4.9 percent on the same pressures. Apple gained share, leaning on the Neo's affordability and the M-series pipeline.

For buyers the calculus is straightforward. If you need a pro laptop this year, the base M6 MacBook Pro delivers the 2nm jump without waiting for the chassis revolution. If the OLED redesign is the goal, the M7 wait runs about six months longer, and the RAM market may look very different by then.
The bigger picture is that Apple is reordering its entire silicon strategy around AI economics and memory costs. Skipping the M6 Pro and Max, fast-tracking the M7, and fighting RAM prices on two fronts all come from the same playbook, and the base M6 MacBook Pro is the first real-world test of it.
Watch the October-November launch window for pricing. If Apple pairs the M6's bandwidth jump with a more aggressive base config, the redesigned 2027 model will face a much tougher act to follow.
