Nvidia's RTX Spark Mini PC Is Apple's Worst Nightmare

I have spent the last four months refreshing Apple's Mac Studio order page like it's a sports score I can't look away from. Four months of lead times. Configurations vanishing. And the whole time, I kept thinking: someone is going to walk into this gap. I just didn't expect it to be Nvidia.

Here's why I think the RTX Spark wave — led by Dell's new XPS RTX Spark Desktop — is the most serious threat to Apple's pro desktop lineup in a decade. Not because of benchmarks. Because of timing.

Nvidia Finally Shows Up With a Whole Chip

At Computex 2026, Nvidia officially became a consumer PC chipmaker. Not a graphics card vendor. A chipmaker. The RTX Spark is a complete Arm-based superchip — the same GB10 silicon family that powers the DGX Spark "personal AI supercomputer," now aimed squarely at laptops and mini-PCs. The flagship version packs 20 CPU cores, 6,144 GPU cores, and 128GB of LPDDR5X memory. Nvidia's senior director of product management called it "the most efficient PC chip ever built" — without sharing a single chart to back it up, which is very on-brand, and which I'll get to.

Microsoft, Asus, HP, MSI, Lenovo, and Dell all have hardware lined up for this fall. The Surface Laptop Ultra alone — a 15-inch mini-LED monster with 2,000 nits of peak brightness — tells you how seriously Microsoft is taking this.

Dell Just Built a Mac Studio for the AI Crowd

Then there's the machine that made me sit up: the Dell XPS RTX Spark Desktop. It's a compact box with serious Mac Studio energy — power button up front, four USB-C ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and a microSD slot around the back. Under the hood it runs the N1X, the more powerful RTX Spark chip, with up to 128GB of RAM.

That last number is the whole story. Here's why I think this matters right now:

  • Apple can't ship. Mac Studio lead times are running four months or more. Four. Months. For a working professional, that's a career decision, not a purchase.
  • Apple can't scale. The current Mac Studio tops out at 96GB of RAM — and only on the pricey M3 Ultra. The lesser models cap at 64GB. AI workloads are laughing at 64GB.
  • Apple's next move is stalled. The M5 Mac Studio refresh is reportedly sidelined by the RAM crisis that's squeezing the entire industry — including, by the way, Dell and Nvidia.

So the pitch writes itself: an AI-focused mini PC with 128GB of unified memory, from a company whose GPUs already run half the AI on the planet, arriving exactly when Apple's equivalent is back-ordered into next year.

Now the Part Where I Play Skeptic

I like this story too much to let it run unchecked. The chatter puts RTX Spark desktops north of $4,000, possibly closer to $5,000. That's not a budget rebellion; that's Mac Studio pricing with a different logo. Then there's the emulation question: RTX Spark is Arm silicon, so legacy x86 Windows software has to run through Microsoft's Prism emulator. Microsoft has spent years polishing it for Qualcomm, and Nvidia's graphics and AI muscle should help — but "should" is doing heavy lifting until reviews land.

And yes, the "most efficient PC chip ever built" claim is still completely unsubstantiated. Nvidia said it with a straight face and showed nothing. I'm choosing to be intrigued, not converted.

Here's my thesis, and I'm sticking to it: the RTX Spark doesn't need to be perfect to change this market. It needs to be available. Apple's biggest weakness right now isn't silicon — it's supply. If Dell, Microsoft, and Asus can actually ship 128GB AI boxes in September while Apple is still quoting January delivery dates, the professional AI crowd will switch in numbers that will genuinely surprise people.

Apple has survived challengers before by being simply better. This time, the challenger doesn't need to be better. It just needs to show up.
