Apple's next high-end chip just got its most ambitious spec yet: a leaked M7 Ultra with support for up to 1.5 TB of unified memory, positioned as a direct challenger to Nvidia's Blackwell-class AI accelerators. The report, relayed by MacRumors from a supply-chain source, paints the clearest picture yet of how far Apple is willing to push its silicon to compete in the AI arms race.
The timing is no accident. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in June that Apple canceled high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max chips entirely, choosing instead to fast-track an AI-first M7 family. The M7 generation is being built around on-device AI and GPU-heavy workloads, and Apple is reportedly willing to skip a full generational cycle to get it to market sooner.
Why 1.5 TB of Memory Matters
Unified memory is the secret weapon of Apple silicon. Because the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine share a single pool of memory, a machine with 1.5 TB can load models that would normally require a rack of dedicated servers.
There is precedent for this price point. The last Mac to offer 1.5 TB of RAM was the 2019 Mac Pro, where the memory alone cost $25,000 and a fully loaded system could reach $53,000. For comparison, the cheapest Nvidia Blackwell processor currently sells for $12,499.99.
Apple is also navigating a memory shortage that has pushed DRAM prices sharply higher. The company recently raised Mac prices in India, with the base M4 Max Mac Studio jumping from 149,900 to 214,900 rupees and the 96 GB M3 Ultra configuration climbing from 259,900 to 429,900 rupees. A 1.5 TB M7 Ultra Mac would not be cheap.
The AI-First Roadmap Takes Shape
According to the leaked schedule, Apple has already taped out the M7 just six months after the M6 -- an unusually fast turnaround. The base M7 is expected in the first half of 2027, followed by the M7 Pro and M7 Max at the end of 2027, with the M7 Ultra arriving in 2028.
The M7 Ultra's neural engine performance is said to approach that of dedicated accelerators like Nvidia Blackwell. That would mark a major milestone: for the first time, a Mac could plausibly stand in for a GPU server for serious AI workloads.
The Neural Engine's roots trace back to Apple's canceled self-driving car project, which helped lay the groundwork for the technology that debuted in the iPhone X in 2017. That decade of work is now paying off in the company's most AI-obsessed chip generation yet.
What Comes Next
Beyond the Mac, Apple is reportedly preparing a more powerful server for Apple Intelligence based on the M5 Ultra, internally codenamed J246, with an M7 Ultra-based server chip targeted for 2029. Rumors also point to M8 chips, including a processor codenamed Soko and high-end Mac chips under the Cardinal name for 2028.
If even half of this roadmap holds, Apple is no longer quietly competing in AI -- it is building the hardware to go head-to-head with Nvidia, memory crisis and all. The question is whether the Mac market is ready to pay Blackwell-era prices for Apple silicon.
For now, the M7 Ultra remains a rumor, and the 1.5 TB figure is unconfirmed by Apple. But the trajectory is unmistakable: the company that once treated AI as a feature is now treating it as the reason its chips exist.
