Move over, bank robbers. The hottest crime in America right now is stealing truckloads of AI hardware, and the criminals have upgraded from bolt cutters to full Fast & Furious choreography. If your next GPU shipment is riding shotgun with a security escort, you might want to read this before it gets PIT maneuvered into the void.
Gerardo Pachuca has spent 25 years investigating cargo thieves as a consultant and former Los Angeles sheriff's detective, and he says he has never seen behavior this brazen. In two recent incidents, robbers stole high-value hardware destined for AI data centers using a tactic straight out of a heist movie: disable the escort, then watch the truck drive away forever.
The Heist: Rear-End, Spin, Disappear
Both shipments were traveling from Silicon Valley to Southern California, each one tailed by private security professionals in unmarked escort vehicles. Hours into one journey, another driver rear-ended the escort in a hit-and-run, forcing it to stop. In the other case, the escort was nudged into a tailspin by a car performing a PIT maneuver, then the attacker fled.
Everyone familiar with the "accidents" believes the escorts were deliberately immobilized. Once the semitrucks lost their guardians, the drivers kept going, just not to their planned destinations. They were never heard from again, and millions of dollars in data center gear remains unaccounted for.
Nobody was hurt, which is the suspicious part. The truck drivers are widely assumed to have been in on the scheme, an increasingly common twist in modern freight crime. Danny Ramon, director of intelligence at freight-monitoring firm Overhaul, calls it a "coordinated assault" on a shipment of AI hardware. Pachuca sums up the state of his industry with four words: "It's the worst I've seen."
Why Your GPU Is the New Cargo Gold
The booming AI data center buildout has created a target thieves simply cannot resist. Total spending on data center construction in just the first half of this year surpassed the total for all of 2025. Escort companies, once busy mainly before the holidays, now work year-round, with liquid cooling parts, servers, and computer chips as their biggest clients.
"Now that the values have shot through the roof, we're getting called all the time," says Michael Duffy, CEO of escort firm Solutions Group International, which has protected 13,000 shipments over four years without a single loss. His counterparts are now telling personnel to call 911 at the first sign of trouble.
Verisk CargoNet data released this month shows why escorts are nervous: while the overall number of thefts reported last quarter fell 26 percent year over year, the value of the goods taken more than doubled. Criminals are chasing quality over quantity, and nothing says quality like a truck full of enterprise network gear. Recent recoveries paint the picture:
- In April, thieves allegedly made off with 34,560 optical transceiver cables and 96 network switch modules traveling from Olive Branch, Mississippi, to Richardson, Texas.
- In May, Southern California authorities seized $4 million in allegedly stolen cargo, including data center cooling equipment from Deepcool AI, and arrested one person.
- In June, a tip from a buyer who smelled a deal "too good to be true" led California Highway Patrol to recover $2.2 million in merchandise, including eight pallets of Celestica server switches built for Meta, worth $550,000.
The Master Plan: Identity Theft, Trucking Edition
Here is the part that should terrify every logistics manager: modern cargo heists rarely involve snipping locks or breaking down truck doors. Thieves simply steal a trucking company's identity. They hack into an operator's email with phishing or social engineering, take over the business, and sign up for loads using its legitimate motor vehicle registrations.
Another favorite trick is buying a motor carrier number, the unique identifier assigned to trucking companies by federal regulators, from an owner willing to sell it off illegally. That lets fraudsters pose as a real business with a long-standing permit, phone number, and email address. Both escort-targeted thefts involved recently sold carrier numbers, and the Meta switches were stolen the same way, with thieves falsifying documents to impersonate a legitimate carrier.
GPS trackers on stolen trucks get spoofed or deactivated, leaving no trace. "These are very sophisticated, very organized criminal organizations," says Ben Wilkens, director of cybersecurity at the National Motor Freight Traffic Association. A new federal system called MOTUS aims to crack down on the impersonation scams, and regulators issued a bulletin in March reminding the industry that registration numbers can only be sold as part of corporate transactions.
Until the system catches up, the freight industry is fighting back with GPS trackers on individual loads, license-plate cameras, and fake-driver-ID scanners. Georgia shipper FLS Transportation detects a scammer trying to steal one of its loads every single day, and still loses cargo every month or so, most recently $650,000 worth of tools.
Where does all the loot go? US export controls on chips create a powerful incentive to smuggle stolen hardware overseas, and location pings from activated parts suggest much of it ends up in China. "Reporting structures and standards vary from one state to another, and the prosecution rates are low enough that this is a very high-reward, low-risk crime," Wilkens says. "It's easy money."
So the next time someone jokes that GPUs are worth more than gold, remember: the criminals have noticed. Your data center's next shipment might be tailed by more than just a tracking page, and somewhere out there, a PIT-maneuver specialist is practicing for his big scene. At least the truck drivers get a cut of the haul, which is more than most AI startups can say.
