Causes
- Open-ear speaker driver overload at high volume — the XREAL One Pro features integrated open-ear speakers tuned by Bose, which use a unique sound chamber design that directs sound toward the ear canal without covering it. The small custom driver (approximately 12 mm) has a limited linear excursion range. When volume is raised above 60–70% in the connected device's volume slider, the driver hits its mechanical excursion limit, causing the voice coil to bottom out against the magnetic gap. This produces a distinct crackling, buzzing, or rattling sound, particularly noticeable on bass-heavy content like movie explosions, music kick drums, or deep-voiced podcast hosts
- Audio protocol mismatch between the X1 chip and the source device — the XREAL One Pro's X1 chip acts as a USB audio class (UAC) device, receiving digital audio over the USB-C connection alongside the video signal. Different source devices negotiate different audio formats: some send 16-bit/48 kHz PCM stereo, others send 24-bit/96 kHz, and some send encoded formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. If the source device negotiates an audio format that the X1 chip's USB audio controller does not fully support — such as multi-channel encoded audio expecting a surround-sound receiver — the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) may receive malformed audio frames, resulting in intermittent crackling, popping, or digital distortion
- USB-C cable audio channel interference — the DP Alt Mode protocol carries audio and video over the same USB-C link using the Sideband Use (SBU) and SuperSpeed differential pairs. If the USB-C cable has poor shielding, worn connectors, or marginal differential impedance (especially on longer or third-party cables), electromagnetic interference from the high-speed video signal can bleed into the audio differential pair. This manifests as low-level static, buzzing, or a whining noise that changes pitch with on-screen content brightness (coil whine coupled through the cable shield)
- Moisture or debris in the speaker grille — the open-ear speaker grille on each temple is a fine acoustic mesh. Sweat, rain, facial moisturiser, or dust can accumulate in the mesh over time, partially blocking the acoustic waveguide. This causes the speaker driver to work against an impedance mismatch, producing distortion at lower volumes than normal. The XREAL One Pro has an IP54 rating (splash resistant), but the speaker grille is not sealed — condensation from temperature changes (e.g., moving from an air-conditioned room to a humid outdoor environment) can also form inside the grille, causing temporary crackling until the moisture evaporates
- Firmware DSP limiter misconfiguration — the X1 chip includes a digital signal processor (DSP) with a dynamic range compressor and a hardware limiter designed to prevent speaker driver overload. Community reports on the XREAL subreddit have identified that early XREAL One Pro firmware versions shipped with the DSP limiter threshold set too high, allowing the audio signal to clip before the limiter engages. This DSP misconfiguration causes audible crackling on transient peaks (sharp sounds like door slams, cymbal crashes, and plosive consonants in speech) even at moderate listening volumes
- Ground loop noise from the source device's USB-C port grounding — the XREAL One Pro's audio output shares a ground reference with the source device through the USB-C cable's ground plane. Devices with poor USB port grounding — particularly laptops running on ungrounded power adapters (two-prong plugs) or certain Android phones with switching charger noise — can inject 50/60 Hz mains hum and high-frequency switching noise into the audio path. This noise is amplified by the Bose-tuned amplifier and heard as a constant background buzz or whine that changes when the source device is plugged into or unplugged from AC power
How to Fix
- Reduce the source device volume to 60% or lower and use a separate volume source: disconnect the XREAL One Pro from your device and reconnect. Set your source device's volume to approximately 60% of maximum (roughly 15–18 out of 30 clicks on a phone, or 60 out of 100 on a Windows laptop). Then, if you need more volume, use an external amplifier — this is not a realistic portable solution, so instead try lowering the system volume to 50% and compensating with an app-level volume boost. For Windows laptops, use the "Loudness Equalization" setting: right-click the speaker icon in the system tray → Sound → Playback → XREAL One Pro → Properties → Enhancements → enable Loudness Equalization. This applies a dynamic range compressor before the audio reaches the glasses, preventing the speaker driver from being overdriven by transient peaks
- Change the audio output format on your source device: on Windows, right-click the speaker icon → Sound → Playback → XREAL One Pro → Properties → Advanced → default format → select "16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)" (not 24-bit or 96 kHz). On macOS, open Audio MIDI Setup → select XREAL One Pro → set format to "44100.0 Hz / 2ch-16bit" or "48000.0 Hz / 2ch-16bit." On Android, go to Developer Options → Bluetooth Audio Codec is irrelevant here (the glasses use USB audio), but ensure "Disable USB audio routing" is OFF under Developer Options. On Samsung phones, go to Settings → Sounds and Vibration → Advanced Sound Settings → Sound Quality and Effects → Adapt Sound → select an age-based profile — this applies a system-level equaliser that reduces the high-frequency gain that triggers crackling on the open-ear drivers
- Clean the speaker grilles on both temples: inspect the long thin mesh grille on the outer face of each temple arm. Use a dry, soft-bristled brush (a clean dry toothbrush works well) to gently brush along the length of the grille in one direction to dislodge any dust or debris. For stubborn buildup, use a piece of Blue Tack or adhesive putty — press it gently onto the grille and pull straight off — this lifts particles from the mesh without pushing them deeper. Do NOT use compressed air, water, isopropyl alcohol, or cotton swabs, as these can deform the mesh or push debris into the speaker chamber. Allow the glasses to air-dry for 30 minutes if used during exercise before testing audio again
- Test with a different USB-C cable: replace the USB-C cable with the original cable that shipped with the XREAL One Pro, or with a certified USB4 40 Gbps cable (marked with the USB4 logo). A damaged or poorly shielded cable is one of the most common causes of audio static and crackling because the DP Alt Mode video signal's electromagnetic field couples into the audio pair through inadequate shielding. If the crackling disappears with a different cable, discard the old cable — do not reuse it even if video works fine, as marginal cable faults can cause intermittent audio issues that are hard to diagnose
- Update the XREAL One Pro firmware to resolve the DSP limiter issue: connect the glasses to a computer and download the XREAL One Pro Firmware Updater from xreal.com/us/support/one-pro. Run the updater and follow the on-screen instructions. Firmware versions 1.7.0 and later include a fix for the DSP compressor threshold — the limiter engages earlier, preventing the speaker driver from receiving clipped audio signals. The firmware update also recalibrates the X1 chip's audio DAC output voltage, reducing the overall gain structure so that the audible crackling threshold moves higher up the volume range. After updating, you may need to increase the source volume by 10–15% to compensate, but the crackling should be eliminated even at high listening levels
- Eliminate ground loop noise: if you hear a constant buzz or hum when the XREAL One Pro is connected to a laptop, unplug the laptop's AC charger and run on battery power. If the buzz disappears when on battery, the noise is caused by ground loop interference through the charger's earth connection. Use a ground loop isolator for the USB-C connection (a small inline USB-C filter with common-mode choke, available from electronics retailers). Alternatively, try connecting the laptop and the glasses to the same power strip — this equalises the ground potential and reduces the voltage differential that drives ground loop current
- Disable any audio processing features on the source device that may conflict with the X1 chip's USB audio: on Windows, right-click the speaker icon → Sound → Playback → XREAL One Pro → Properties → Enhancements → check "Disable all enhancements." On Android, go to Developer Options and toggle off "HD Audio" and "Disable USB audio routing" — re-enable after testing. On Samsung phones, disable Dolby Atmos in Quick Settings before connecting the glasses. These processing features can re-encode audio into formats that the X1 chip's DAC misinterprets, causing clicks and pops when the processing buffers overflow or format negotiation fails
- If crackling persists on only one side (typically the left speaker, as widely reported), the speaker driver may be physically damaged from earlier over-excursion. Switch the mono audio balance fully to the working side: on Windows, right-click the speaker icon → Sound → Playback → XREAL One Pro → Properties → Levels → Balance → drag the crackling side's slider to 0. On Mac, go to System Settings → Accessibility → Audio → Stereo as Mono — enable this to mix both channels into each speaker. On Android, go to Settings → Accessibility → Audio Balance → slide the balance fully toward the working side. If one speaker is completely silent or distorted at all volumes, contact XREAL Support (support.xreal.com) for a warranty replacement. Individual temple arm replacement is not user-serviceable — the open-ear Bose speaker assembly is permanently bonded into the glasses frame. XREAL's one-year limited warranty covers speaker driver defects, and RMA turnaround time is typically 5–10 business days
