Causes
- Source device does not support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode — the XREAL One Pro requires a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) for video transmission. Many phones, tablets, and laptops ship with USB-C ports that only support USB 2.0 data and charging but not video output. Connecting to a non-DP Alt Mode port results in a completely black screen with no image, even though the glasses may power on (the electrochromic dimming and audio may still function)
- Incompatible or faulty USB-C cable — the XREAL One Pro relies on the 20 Gbps High Bit Rate 3 (HBR3) lane over USB-C for uncompressed 1920×1080 video at 120 Hz with 10-bit colour depth. Not all USB-C cables are rated for high-speed video — charging-only cables (USB 2.0-rated, typically marked with the USB-IF battery icon) lack the SuperSpeed differential pairs needed for DP Alt Mode and will deliver power but no video signal. A cable with physical damage, kinked shielding, or worn connector pins can also cause intermittent or no display
- Device not in display mirroring or extended desktop mode — when connecting the XREAL One Pro to a Windows laptop, MacBook, or Android phone, the source device must actively route its display output to the USB-C port. Some devices default to charge-only mode for the USB-C port and require manual enabling of screen mirroring, DeX mode (Samsung), or display extension in the operating system's display settings. Without this, the glasses receive a powered signal but no video data stream
- Firmware handshake failure between the X1 chip and the source device — the XREAL One Pro's custom X1 spatial chip negotiates EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) and HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) with the source device. If the EDID handshake fails — due to an incompatible GPU driver, outdated HDCP version, or a locked HDMI-to-USB-C adapter — the source device may not detect the glasses as a valid display, resulting in "No Signal" on the glasses or the source displaying "Unknown Display"
- Insufficient power delivery from the source USB-C port — the XREAL One Pro draws approximately 1.5W to 2.5W for its dual Micro-OLED displays, X1 chip, Bose speakers, and electrochromic dimming. Some laptop USB-C ports limit power output to 4.5W (900 mA at 5V) when not connected to a power adapter. If the port cannot supply enough current, the glasses may power the X1 chip and audio but shut down the OLED drivers to conserve power, producing a black screen while the indicator light and dimming still function
- USB-C hub or adapter incompatibility — using the XREAL One Pro through a third-party USB-C hub, HDMI-to-USB-C adapter, or extension cable can cause display failure because many hubs do not pass through the full DP Alt Mode signal with sideband use (SBU) channels that the X1 chip requires for EDID communication. Only hubs explicitly advertised as "AR glasses compatible" or with full DP Alt Mode throughput are reliable
How to Fix
- Verify your source device supports USB-C DP Alt Mode: check your device specifications or user manual for "DisplayPort Alt Mode," "DP Alt Mode," "Video Output via USB-C," or "USB-C with DisplayPort." For Apple devices: iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPad Pro (M1/M2/M3/M4), iPad Air (M1/M2), and all MacBooks with USB-C ports support DP Alt Mode. For Samsung Galaxy phones: S22 series and newer support DP Alt Mode via Samsung DeX. For Google Pixel: Pixel 8 and newer support DP Alt Mode (check your specific model). For Windows laptops: ensure the USB-C port has a "D" or "DP" icon next to it. If your device does not support DP Alt Mode, you will need an active HDMI-to-USB-C adapter with external power (like the XREAL Hub or a third-party AR-compatible adapter)
- Test with the original XREAL USB-C cable or a certified USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cable: the XREAL One Pro ships with a purpose-designed USB-C cable rated for DP Alt Mode. If you are using a different cable, replace it with the original cable. For a reliable replacement, use a USB4 Gen 3×2 cable (40 Gbps, marked with "USB4" or "Thunderbolt 4" on the connector) — these cables are guaranteed to carry DP Alt Mode at HBR3 speeds. Do NOT use a standard USB-C charging cable marked only with the USB-IF battery and charging icon
- Force the source device into display output mode: on Samsung Galaxy phones, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, then tap "DeX" or connect the glasses and wait 3 seconds for the DeX prompt. On Windows laptops, press Win + P and select "Duplicate" or "Extend" — if the glasses do not appear as a second display, open Settings → System → Display → Detect → "Detect other display." On MacBooks, open System Settings → Displays → hold the Option key and click "Detect Displays." On iPhones and iPads, screen mirroring should start automatically when a DP Alt Mode device is connected — if not, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → scroll down and ensure "Screen Mirroring" is enabled
- Try connecting the glasses to a different compatible device to isolate the problem: if you have a second phone, laptop, or tablet that supports DP Alt Mode, connect the XREAL One Pro to it. If the display works on the second device, the issue is with the original source device (driver, port, or settings). If the display remains black on all devices, the glasses themselves may need a firmware reset or have a hardware fault — proceed to the reset step
- Perform a forced factory reset on the XREAL One Pro: with the glasses connected to power (via USB-C to any power source), press and hold the brightness down button (the lower button on the right temple) for 20 seconds. The electrochromic dimming will flash twice — this confirms the reset. Then disconnect the glasses from power, reconnect to your source device, and check for video output. This clears any stuck EDID state or X1 chip handshake parameters that may be preventing display negotiation
- Update the XREAL One Pro firmware: connect the glasses to a computer and visit xreal.com/us/support/one-pro — download the XREAL One Pro Firmware Updater tool for your OS (Windows or macOS). Run the updater, connect the glasses via USB-C, and follow the on-screen instructions. Outdated firmware can contain bugs in the DP Alt Mode negotiation stack that cause black screen issues with certain GPU drivers or operating system versions. The updater will also reset the X1 chip's display controller during the flash process
- Avoid using USB-C hubs and adapters — connect the glasses directly to the source device's USB-C port whenever possible. If you must use a hub (e.g., your laptop has only one USB-C port), use a hub that is certified for AR glasses, such as the official XREAL Hub, which has a dedicated video-lane pass-through chipset. Third-party USB-C hubs with HDMI output will NOT work for the XREAL One Pro unless they specifically support DP Alt Mode pass-through with SBU routing — most multi-port hubs route video through an internal DisplayPort-to-HDMI converter that is not compatible with the glasses' DP Alt Mode input
- If the screen remains completely black and the glasses' indicator light (the small LED near the right temple button) does not turn on at all when connected, the glasses may not be receiving power. Try connecting the included USB-C cable to a wall charger (5V/1A or higher) without any source device — if the electrochromic dimming does not activate after 10 seconds, the glasses have a power delivery fault.
