Causes

  • Battery entered deep discharge protection mode — The WHOOP 5.0's rechargeable lithium-polymer battery has a protection circuit module (PCM) that disconnects the cell when voltage drops below its safe threshold (~2.8V) to prevent irreversible chemical damage. This is the most common cause of a completely dead WHOOP 5.0, especially if the device has been left off the Wireless PowerPack charger for more than 14–20 days. When the PCM trips, the device shows no green or blue LEDs, no vibration, and no response to being placed on the charger for the first 30–60 minutes — the protection IC must first detect a stable charging voltage before it reconnects the cell.
  • Firmware crash during OTA update leaving the BMS in a locked state — The WHOOP 5.0's custom ARM SoC runs a proprietary firmware that manages power states, sensor polling, and Bluetooth communication. If a firmware update over Bluetooth is interrupted (phone moves out of range, app is closed, or battery dies mid-update), the bootloader can enter an unrecoverable error state. How to Fix

  1. Clean the charging contacts on both the device and the PowerPack — Use a lint-free microfiber cloth slightly dampened with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to wipe the two gold-plated pogo pins on the back of the WHOOP 5.0 and the corresponding contact pads on the Wireless PowerPack charger. Pay special attention to the recessed area around the pins where sweat and oils accumulate. Allow 5 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate completely. Dry contacts are essential for the charging circuit to detect the charger — even a thin layer of dried sweat can prevent inductive charging negotiation.
  2. Place the WHOOP 5.0 on the PowerPack with precise alignment — Position the WHOOP 5.0 on the Wireless PowerPack so that the WHOOP logo on the device is facing upward and the device sits perfectly flat in the center of the PowerPack's charging surface. The LED on the PowerPack should glow solid green (or white, depending on revision) within 5 seconds. If the LED flashes red or orange, the alignment is off — lift and reposition the device slightly until the LED turns solid. Do not use a case, band adapter, or any material thicker than the WHOOP's standard band between the device and the charger. Leave the device on the charger for at least 2 hours without moving it.
  3. Perform a forced reboot using the WHOOP app — Open the WHOOP app on your paired smartphone. Go to Device Settings → scroll down and tap "Reboot Device."   4. After 24 hours, remove the device from the charger and press the side button briefly — if the LED glows green, the battery has recovered.
  5. Dry out the charging contacts using the "rice-free" method — If you suspect moisture ingress (common after workouts or swimming), remove the WHOOP 5.0 from its band completely. Place the device pod in a warm, dry location (20–25°C, not direct sunlight or a microwave/oven) with the charging pins facing downward on an absorbent cloth for 24–48 hours. Do not use rice — rice dust can get inside the charging port cavity and cause additional contact issues.   6. The WHOOP 5.0 is a sealed, non-user-serviceable device — there are no accessible reset pogo pins, battery connectors, or hardware reset buttons inside.
