Causes
- Bluetooth stack corruption after a failed firmware OTA — The WHOOP 5.0 uses Bluetooth LE for all communication with the WHOOP app. If a firmware update is interrupted (phone moves out of range, app crashes, or phone battery dies mid-update), the Bluetooth LE stack on the device can be left in an inconsistent state where the device advertises itself but rejects pairing attempts with a generic "Connection Failed" error. The WHOOP 5.0's custom ARM SoC runs a dedicated Bluetooth controller firmware — a corrupted OTA can leave this controller with mismatched encryption keys or service discovery tables that prevent the app from completing the bonding process.
- Phone-side Bluetooth profile corruption from multiple pairing/unpairing cycles — Each time you pair or unpair the WHOOP 5.0 with your phone, the operating system creates and destroys Bluetooth LE GATT profile entries. After several cycles — especially across iOS or Android OS major updates (e.g., upgrading from iOS 18 to iOS 19 or Android 14 to Android 15) — the stored bonding information can become corrupted. The phone may show "WHOOP 5.0" in its paired devices list but fail to establish a GATT connection, displaying a spinning "Connecting..." indicator that never resolves, or a "Connection Failed" toast notification within 10–15 seconds of attempting to pair.
- Bluetooth LE advertising timeout preventing discovery — The WHOOP 5.0 enters Bluetooth LE advertising mode only under specific conditions: when the device is first powered on, after a reboot, or when the app initiates a connection. Unlike a standard Bluetooth speaker that stays discoverable indefinitely, the WHOOP 5.0 advertises for approximately 30–60 seconds before entering a low-power sleep state to conserve battery. - WHOOP 5.0 already paired to another phone causing connection contention — The WHOOP 5.0 can remember only one paired phone at a time in its Bluetooth LE bonding table. If the device was previously paired with a different phone (e.g., an old phone you replaced) and that phone still has Bluetooth enabled within range, the WHOOP 5.0 may auto-connect to the old phone when it hears its advertisement, preventing your new phone from establishing a connection. How to Fix
- Force-close the WHOOP app and restart Bluetooth on your phone — On your phone, fully close the WHOOP app (swipe it away from the app switcher / recent apps list). Then go to Bluetooth settings and toggle Bluetooth OFF, wait 15 seconds, and toggle it back ON. This clears your phone's Bluetooth LE controller state and flushes any stale advertisement caches that may be holding onto a previous WHOOP 5.0 connection record. Reopen the WHOOP app and tap "Connect Device" — the app should begin scanning immediately. If the device is in advertising mode, it should appear within 5–15 seconds.
- Forget the WHOOP 5.0 in your phone's Bluetooth settings — Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings. If "WHOOP 5.0" (or "WHOOP 5.0 MG") appears in your paired devices list, tap the info icon (iOS) or gear icon (Android) and select "Forget This Device" (iOS) or "Unpair" (Android). This deletes the cached Bluetooth LE bonding information on the phone side. Then close Bluetooth settings, restart your phone completely (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on). After the restart, open the WHOOP app — the app will guide you through re-pairing from scratch, establishing a fresh GATT profile with correct encryption keys.
- Put the WHOOP 5.0 into pairing mode by rebooting it from the app — If the device is still connected to your phone intermittently, open the WHOOP app, go to Device Settings, and tap "Reboot Device." Wait 60 seconds for the WHOOP 5.0 to restart. After the reboot, the device enters advertising mode for 60 seconds. During this window, the app should automatically reconnect. If "WHOOP 5.0" is listed under paired devices, tap "Forget This Device" to remove it. Then turn off Bluetooth on the old phone (or turn the old phone off entirely) to prevent it from interfering. The WHOOP 5.0 will then be free to accept a fresh pairing from your new phone. If you no longer have access to the old phone, you will need to contact WHOOP Support to have the device's pairing table remotely cleared — WHOOP Support can send a command to the device via its cellular/Wi-Fi backend to reset the Bluetooth bonding table.
