Causes
- Bluetooth is off, in airplane mode, or the connection dropped — the Pro (2024) is a Bluetooth Low Energy device that needs a live Bluetooth link to your phone for pairing, ringing, and scanning. Airplane mode, a Bluetooth toggle that got turned off, or a flaky radio stack after a phone update all present as a tile that won't connect.
- The tile is already registered to another account — a Tile can only be linked to one Tile/Life360 account at a time. A second-hand or re-boxed Pro that was paired to someone else's account will fail to add on your phone and usually triggers a "this Tile is already paired" error until it's removed from the original account.
- The app is outdated or its permissions were revoked — pairing needs both Bluetooth and location permission granted to the Tile app, plus a reasonably recent app version. After an iOS/Android permission reset or a fresh install that skipped the permission prompts, the app can't complete the pairing handshake.
- Another phone or several Tiles are fighting for the connection — if more than one phone has the Tile app nearby, or multiple tiles are in pairing mode at once, the phones can connect to the wrong device or the wrong tile grabs the pairing slot, and the Pro never pairs.
- Your phone doesn't meet the minimum requirements — Tile requires iOS 15 (or newer) or Android with Bluetooth 4.0+ and location services. An older phone or a heavily locked-down work profile can silently fail to complete pairing.
How to Fix
- Make sure Bluetooth and location are actually on — pull down the quick settings and confirm Bluetooth is enabled and you're not in airplane mode. On Android also confirm Location is on — Tile needs it for pairing even though the tracker itself has no GPS. Turn Bluetooth off and back on to reset the radio stack.
- Update the Tile app and restart your phone — install any pending Tile app update from the App Store or Play Store, then fully restart the phone. A restart clears the stale Bluetooth connections that usually cause a "won't connect" that persists across toggles.
- Grant both Bluetooth and location permissions to the app — open Settings → Tile (iOS) or Settings → Apps → Tile → Permissions (Android) and make sure Nearby/Bluetooth and Location are enabled, then force-close and reopen the app. On iOS, also confirm Bluetooth is allowed in Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth.
- Free the tile from the old account — if the Pro was bought second-hand or shows an "already paired" message, have the previous owner remove it from their Tile/Life360 account (tap the tile → settings → Remove), or contact Tile support with proof of purchase to release it. Only then will it appear in your app's add screen.
- Remove and re-add the tile — in the app, tap the Pro → settings → Remove this Tile, then tap the + / Add Tile and press the physical button on the Pro when prompted. Keep the phone right next to the tile (within a metre) during the handshake and ignore other Tiles in pairing mode so the correct one registers.
- Move closer and remove interference — bring the phone within a metre of the Pro and take it out of any metal enclosure. Metal desks, RFID-blocking bags, and crowded Bluetooth environments (many paired devices) can block or delay the pairing handshake.
- Escalate if one tile still won't pair — if other Tiles pair fine on the same phone but this specific Pro never does after a clean re-add, the unit may be defective. Contact Tile support (tile.com/contact) with your model, serial, and purchase date — a faulty radio is covered under the warranty.
