Causes
- The "Enable the headphones' microphone operation" setting in the Sony | Sound Connect app is turned Off by default. With it off, the mics only engage automatically during phone calls, so the microphone appears dead for voice memos, voice notes, and many apps. Multiple XM6 owners on r/SonyHeadphones report callers "not being able to hear me at all" until this is enabled.
- The Bluetooth connection mode is set to "Priority on sound quality" (LDAC). During calls the XM6 must switch to the HFP headset profile, and the LDAC-heavy handshake degrades the mic channel — users on iPhone 16 Pro and OnePlus 13 report callers hearing them "barely" or "asking me to repeat myself".
- The beamforming mic array and AI noise reduction are too aggressive: they suppress background noise so strongly that the beginnings and endings of syllables get clipped, making your voice sound cut off or robotic on the other end, especially in quiet pauses between words.
- Multipoint connection conflicts. When the XM6 is connected to two devices at once (e.g., iPhone + iPad, or phone + laptop), the HFP mic channel can be handed to the wrong device, leaving the mic silent on the device you're actually talking on.
- Speak-to-Chat interference. With Speak-to-Chat enabled, the mics stay hot to listen for your voice; if the feature triggers during a call it reprocesses the audio path and degrades mic pickup mid-conversation.
- On Windows, the XM6's headset (HFP) profile can be auto-selected as the default communication device, hijacking call audio from your separate USB or standalone microphone and delivering the XM6's poor-quality HFP mic instead.
How to Fix
- Enable the microphone operation in the app: Open the Sony | Sound Connect app → System → "Enable the headphones' microphone operation" → turn it On. In the same menu you can enable a notification that tells you when the mic is muted. This is the most common fix for a completely dead mic.
- Switch to "Priority on stable connection": In the app go to Sound → Bluetooth Connection Mode → "Priority on stable connection". This drops LDAC and forces SBC/AAC, which stabilises the HFP mic channel during calls. Most users who report choppy or inaudible call audio see an immediate improvement.
- Disable Speak-to-Chat during calls: In the app go to System → Speak-to-Chat → Off (or toggle it off with a quick double-press of the NC/AMB button) so the mics stop renegotiating the audio path mid-conversation.
- Disconnect one device from Multipoint: Turn off Bluetooth on one of the paired devices, or remove it in the app under System → Manage Bluetooth Connections. Test a call with only the active device connected.
- Check the mic openings: Inspect the tiny microphone ports on the outer and inner surfaces of both earcups for dust, earwax, or ear pad fibers blocking them. Gently brush them with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush — never insert anything into the ports and never use liquids.
- Record a test voice memo: On your phone, record a voice memo and play it back. If your voice sounds cut off at word boundaries, the noise-suppression processing is the culprit — try disabling Noise Cancelling (set Ambient Sound Control to "Off") during the call to reduce mic processing load.
- On Windows, fix the default devices: Go to Sound settings → Sound Control Panel, and either set the WH-1000XM6 as both the default device and default communication device (if you want to use its mic), or disable the "Headset" (hands-free) profile in Device properties so Windows stops using the XM6 mic when you have a separate microphone.
- Factory reset and re-pair: Hold the Power and NC/AMB buttons together for about 10 seconds until the indicator flashes blue, then update firmware via the app and re-pair. If callers still can't hear you after every step above — even on a replacement unit, as some r/SonyHeadphones users report — claim the warranty: the mic array is defective.
