Causes
- Recycled polycarbonate plastic used in the hinge/swivel assembly becomes brittle over time, causing the internal screw anchors to crack. Multiple Reddit users report this is a widespread design flaw carried over from the XM5.
- The internal metal hinge plate with screw holes pops out of the plastic earcup housing when the plastic retaining lugs snap. This typically happens after 6–12 months of normal use with 280–400 hours of listening.
- Repeated folding/unfolding and the rotational stress from swivelling the earcups to lie flat puts strain on the thin plastic bridge between the yoke arm and the earcup casing.
- Placing the headphones in a bag without the carrying case causes the swivel to catch on other objects, levering the metal plate out of its plastic housing.
- A manufacturing tolerance issue where the stainless steel MIM hinge reinforcement (added to address XM5 hinge failures) does not extend far enough into the earcup shell to prevent cracking at the screw anchor points.
How to Fix
- Stop using the headphones immediately to prevent further separation of the metal plate from the plastic housing. Continuing to swivel the earcup can strip the remaining plastic threads.
- Assess the damage: If the metal plate has fully popped out but the plastic screw posts inside the earcup are still intact (not cracked), you can carefully snap the plate back into place and apply a small amount of cyanoacrylate (super glue) or two-part epoxy along the seam where the plate meets the plastic housing.
