Causes
- Bluetooth 5.3 codec handshake latency when switching between audio and command channels. Each touch command (volume, skip, play/pause) triggers a control channel negotiation over Bluetooth that can interrupt the LDAC or AAC audio stream for 2–3 seconds, causing a dropout followed by a brief resume-stall cycle.
- Speak-to-Chat feature interference. When enabled, the XM6's beamforming microphones listen for your voice after any control input. The QN3 processor momentarily suspends audio to check for speech, creating a deliberate gap that can feel like a pause after every command.
- Wear detection sensor triggering a false "headphones removed" event when the touch panel is tapped. The capacitive sensor on the right earcup can register the vibration from a volume swipe as a removal event, pausing playback until the sensor re-stabilises.
- Multipoint connection conflict between two active Bluetooth devices. When the XM6 is connected to both a phone and a laptop/second device via Bluetooth Multipoint, a control command can trigger a brief audio path renegotiation between the two codec streams.
- Third-party EQ or sound effect processing (DSEE Extreme, 360 Reality Audio Upmix) introducing additional buffering delay when the codec bitrate changes mid-stream after a volume adjustment.
How to Fix
- Disable Speak-to-Chat in the Sony Headphones Connect app (System → Speak-to-Chat → set to "Off"). This is the most common cause — the feature is designed to pause audio when it thinks you're speaking, and touch commands can falsely trigger it. With Speak-to-Chat off, the post-command pause should disappear immediately.
- Turn off Wear Detection (Auto Play/Pause) in the app (System → Auto Play/Pause when wearing headphones → set to "Off"). This prevents the capacitive sensor from misinterpreting touch gestures as headphone removal events. Test by swiping volume after disabling — if the pause is gone, the sensor was the culprit.
- Switch the Bluetooth connection mode to "Stable Connection" (LDAC off): In the app (Sound → Bluetooth Connection Mode → "Prefer Stable Connection"). This forces the codec to AAC/SBC instead of LDAC, eliminating the high-bandwidth codec renegotiation that causes the skip. If this fixes the issue and you want LDAC back, try switching back on and reducing the LDAC bitrate to 660kbps (Developer Options on Android).
- Disconnect one device from Multipoint by turning off Bluetooth on one connected device or forgetting it in the app (System → Manage Bluetooth Connections → remove one device). Test with only one device connected. If the pauses stop, the multipoint handoff was causing the interruption. You can re-pair both devices later — the issue is intermittent.
- Turn off DSEE Extreme and any sound upmixing (Sound → DSEE Extreme → Off, and 360 Reality Audio Upmix → Off). These processing layers add buffering that amplifies the codec drop gap. After disabling, the audio should resume seamlessly after commands.
- Update the headphone firmware via the Sony Headphones Connect app (Settings → System → Software Update). The v2.1.0 firmware (released April 2026) includes specific fixes for "audio interruption during touch control operation" on the XM6. After updating, perform a factory reset (hold Power + NC/AMB buttons for 7 seconds).
- Reset the headphones and re-pair from scratch: After the firmware update, go to the phone's Bluetooth settings, forget the WH-1000XM6, turn off Bluetooth, and restart the phone. Then re-pair the headphones by holding the power button for 7 seconds (until the LED flashes blue rapidly). Re-configure all settings fresh in the app — do not restore from a backup.
- As a last resort, disable absolute volume on your phone: On Android, go to Developer Options and toggle "Disable Absolute Volume" off (or on — try both). On iOS, try turning off "Change with Buttons" in Sound & Haptics → Headphone Safety. This prevents volume changes from triggering a Bluetooth absolute volume renegotiation that can cause audio drops on the XM6's LC3/AAC pipeline.
