Causes
- The ultra-thin chassis has very little thermal mass — At 4.5 mm unfolded, the Fold 8 is the thinnest book-style foldable ever made. There is simply less metal and glass to absorb and spread heat, so the frame and both displays warm up quickly and feel hot to the touch. Reviewers already described the thicker Fold 7 as "a hand warmer in your pocket" that heated up during light use; the thinner Fold 8 runs into the same physics with even less material to work with.
- The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 under sustained load — Extended gaming sessions, 8K video recording, video calls, wireless hotspot use, and Galaxy AI features push the 3 nm chip hard. On a folded-closed phone the heat is concentrated in a small volume, so the phone can get noticeably warm along the hinge and the outer frame during sustained heavy workloads.
- Ambient heat and direct sunlight — In summer temperatures (high 90s to 100°F), Fold 7 owners reported the phone running "incredibly hot" during outdoor use. The Fold 8's 3,000-nit main display also burns more power (and produces more heat) when it's driven at high brightness to stay visible in direct sun.
- Charging while using the phone — The Fold 8's 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging generate significant heat, and the new silicon-carbon cell runs slightly warmer during fast charging than a conventional cell. Gaming or streaming video while the phone is plugged in stacks charging heat on top of workload heat, which is when the phone feels hottest.
- A buggy software update keeping the CPU busy — The July 2026 security patch caused a CPU loop on several Galaxy flagships that made phones overheat and drain battery until Samsung pushed a corrective update. A similar background process bug on the Fold 8 can keep one or more CPU cores pegged and the phone warm even when you're not doing anything demanding.
How to Fix
- Remove thick cases before heavy use or charging — A bulky case insulates the Fold 8's thin body and traps heat. For gaming, video calls, or fast charging, take the case off (or use a slim case) so the frame can shed heat to the air.
- Get out of direct sunlight and lower the brightness — The fastest way to cool the Fold 8 outdoors is to move into the shade and drop the display brightness — the 3,000-nit panel is a major heat source when driven hard in the sun. The phone should cool noticeably within a few minutes.
- Pause heavy workloads when the phone gets hot — Stop the game, end the video recording, or close the video call and let the phone idle for a few minutes. Close background apps from the Recents screen, and avoid running the hotspot and gaming at the same time.
- Don't fast-charge and use the phone at the same time — Avoid gaming or streaming video while the Fold 8 is plugged in. Charge in a cool room with the phone idle, and remove it from the wireless charger once it reaches 100% — leaving it on the pad keeps it warm.
- Install the latest software update — Samsung ships thermal-management fixes in security patches, including the fix for the July patch CPU loop issue. Go to Settings → Software update → Download and install and install any pending update, then restart the phone.
- Run the Samsung Members diagnostics — Open the Samsung Members app, go to Support → Phone diagnostics, and run the Battery and device temperature checks. The diagnostic report will show whether the phone is within normal thermal ranges and gives you a log to attach if you need to contact Samsung.
- Contact Samsung support if it overheats during light use — If the Fold 8 gets hot while doing ordinary things (web browsing, messaging, short calls) or shuts down from heat, that points to a hardware issue — a defective battery, charging circuit, or board — rather than normal load. Back up your data and contact Samsung support or visit a service center; persistent overheating in normal use is covered under the one-year manufacturer warranty.
