Causes
- Flat, untuned factory audio with no equalization — the RP6's speakers are widely documented as sounding "rough out of the box": tinny, thin, and lacking bass. The stock Android 13 build applies no meaningful EQ or DSP tuning to the front-firing drivers, so the natural weak low-end response of small handheld speakers is sent straight to your ears. Multiple RP6 speaker-fix videos exist for exactly this reason — it's a software tuning problem, not a broken speaker.
- Physically small drivers with a weak low-frequency response — at 304g and 17.2mm thick, the RP6 has room for only small front-firing drivers, and small drivers physically cannot produce bass without heavy equalization. Even a perfect speaker pair would sound thin at this size; the RP6's flat tuning just makes the limitation obvious, especially next to the deeper-tuned speakers of older Retroid models.
- No system-wide equalizer on the stock build — unlike phones with built-in audio enhancement (Dolby, DTS, or vendor EQ apps), the RP6's Android 13 image has no system-wide equalizer, so every game, emulator, and media app outputs the same unflattering flat signal. Owners who only use the built-in audio settings have no way to correct the response without installing a third-party EQ.
- Android volume normalization and per-app audio routing quirks — Android's absolute volume control and per-app audio sessions can flatten dynamics further, and some emulators apply their own audio processing on top of the RP6's output. The result is audio that sounds different (and worse) across apps — dull in one emulator, distorted in another — which makes the speakers seem defective when the chain is just un-tuned.
- A genuine hardware fault in one channel (less common) — a dead or rattling driver, or a loose ribbon connector from shipping, produces one-sided or buzzing audio that no EQ can fix. If the sound is missing on one side entirely or crackles at every volume, it's hardware, not tuning — check the balance settings and test with headphones before assuming the worst.
How to Fix
- Rule out a hardware fault first — check Settings → Accessibility → Audio balance to confirm both channels are centered, play a stereo test track, and plug in headphones. If headphones sound correct but one speaker is silent or crackling, the speaker itself or its connector is faulty — skip the EQ steps and contact Retroid support with a video of the problem.
- Install O2PTweaks — download the latest release from
github.com/FeralAI/o2ptweaks.app(the app is named for the Odin 2 Portal but works on the RP6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) and install the APK on the RP6. O2PTweaks is the loader that makes a system-wide JamesDSP equalizer work on the RP6 without root. - Enable JamesDSP through O2PTweaks — open O2PTweaks and follow its setup prompts, granting wireless debugging (or Shizuku) permission when asked. From its menu, enable the JamesDSP module. You'll know it's active when a JamesDSP app appears and its processing status shows it is handling the audio output.
- Apply the community EQ preset — in JamesDSP, open the equalizer and paste in the preset RP6 owners share (it targets the RP6's driver response):
62 -11.5; 125 -9.8; 250 -0.1; 500 -9.9; 1000 -16.1; 2000 -16.9; 4000 -10.8; 8000 0.0; 16000 -3.5. This tames the harsh upper-mid peak and adds perceived depth. If your JamesDSP build uses bands instead of a string, set the same curve by hand or load the profile from thejdsp4rp5project's presets. - Prefer the Arbitrary Response Equalizer for a better curve — inside JamesDSP, the Multimodal Equalizer is the quick simple option, but the Arbitrary Response Equalizer lets you draw a smoother correction curve, which sounds noticeably better on the RP6's drivers. Start from the preset above and tweak the 250–500 Hz region up slightly if you want more body.
- Use Poweramp Equalizer or an AutoEQ profile as an alternative — if JamesDSP feels like too much, install Poweramp Equalizer from the Play Store and enable it for the RP6's output, or apply an AutoEQ measurement profile for the RP6's speakers. Any system-wide EQ that lets you boost the low end and cut the harsh mid will get most of the benefit.
- Separate speaker and headphone settings — JamesDSP applies its processing to headphones too, where the RP6's headphone output is already decent and the aggressive speaker EQ will sound wrong. Use JamesDSP's per-output toggles to keep the speaker preset active for the built-in speakers and bypass or flatten it when you plug in earphones.
- Drop the volume a notch if you hear distortion — the RP6's small drivers distort near maximum volume even with a good EQ curve. Set the device volume to about 80–90% for loud, clean playback. If distortion persists at low volumes on one side after EQ, the driver is damaged — contact Retroid support, which has replaced faulty speakers under warranty.
