Causes
- Bluetooth profile mismatch between the left and right earbuds — the Nothing Ear (3) uses a TWS+ (True Wireless Stereo Plus) protocol where the right earbud acts as the primary Bluetooth host. If the left earbud loses its synchronised connection state during a call, audio stream switch, or multipoint handoff, it may disconnect silently while the right earbud continues playing, giving the impression that the left bud has died
- Dirty or obstructed charging pins on the earbud stem and pogo pins inside the charging case — the Nothing Ear (3) charges through two exposed gold-plated pins at the bottom of each earbud stem. Earwax, pocket lint, or moisture can accumulate on these contacts, preventing one earbud from charging properly overnight. A partially charged bud may connect briefly and then shut down within minutes, appearing "not working."
- Stuck proximity/optical sensor — the in-ear detection sensor on the affected earbud may falsely detect that the bud has been removed from the ear, causing the Nothing Ear (3) to auto-pause audio on that side. Dust, moisture, or a smudged sensor window can cause this false trigger
- Corrupted firmware state on one earbud — if a firmware update was interrupted (low battery during update, case lid closed mid-update, or Bluetooth disconnection), the DSP and Bluetooth controller firmware on one bud may be out of sync with the other, resulting in no audio output, no touch response, or a dead LED indicator on that side only
- Battery cell imbalance after prolonged storage — if the Nothing Ear (3) was left unused for several weeks with the case battery depleted, one earbud's battery may have discharged below the protection IC's threshold (typically 2.8V). The fuel gauge safety circuit on that bud will refuse to charge or turn on, making it appear completely dead while the other bud works normally
How to Fix
- Clean the charging contacts on both the earbud and the case: use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol (squeeze out excess) to wipe the two gold charging pins on the bottom of the non-working earbud's stem. Also clean the two spring-loaded pogo pins inside the charging case slot for that earbud using a dry toothpick or wooden cocktail stick — metal tools can scratch the gold plating. Allow 2 minutes to air dry, then place the earbud back in the case and verify the red charging LED appears
- Place both earbuds in the charging case, close the lid, and connect the case to USB-C power for at least 30 minutes. A deeply discharged earbud may need up to 15 minutes before it even shows the charging LED. After 30 minutes, open the lid and check if the non-working earbud now shows a red or white LED — if yes, proceed to reconnect it to your phone
- Perform a full factory reset: place both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open. Press and hold the function button on the front of the charging case for 15 seconds until the LED on the case flashes red three times, then releases. Close the lid, wait 10 seconds, then open the lid and re-pair the earbuds with your phone by selecting "Nothing Ear (3)" in your Bluetooth settings. This resets the TWS+ pairing database and forces both earbuds to re-establish their host/client roles from scratch
- Check in-ear detection: open the Nothing X app on your phone, select your Nothing Ear (3), go to Controls → In-Ear Detection, and toggle it Off temporarily. Test audio playback on both earbuds. If audio now works on both sides, the optical sensor on one bud was falsely triggering. Clean the small semicircular sensor window on the inner face of each earbud stem with a dry microfiber cloth and re-enable In-Ear Detection
- Reinstall firmware via the Nothing X app: ensure both earbuds are in the case with the lid open and your phone is nearby. Open Nothing X → tap your Ear (3) → tap the gear icon → Firmware Update → force-check for updates. If a firmware update is available, ensure the earbuds are above 50% battery (keep them in the case plugged into power), close the case lid halfway (a practice unique to Nothing products where the lid must be partially open during updates), and follow the on-screen prompts. A fresh firmware flash overwrites any corrupted bootloader state on the non-working bud
- If the left earbud still shows no LED and does not respond after cleaning and charging, try a contact-pin reset: with both earbuds in the case and the lid closed, press the case function button 5 times rapidly. The case LED will flash white 3 times. Open the lid — this forces the charging case to re-negotiate power delivery to each earbud individually, which can wake a bud whose fuel gauge IC is stuck in protection mode
- Test with another paired device: forget the Nothing Ear (3) from your current phone's Bluetooth settings, then pair them with a different phone or tablet. If both earbuds work on the second device, the issue was a Bluetooth profile corruption on the original phone — go to your original phone's Bluetooth settings, find any saved "Nothing Ear (3)" entries, tap Forget, restart the phone, and pair fresh
- If none of the above works, the non-working earbud likely has a hardware fault — dead battery, damaged speaker driver, or failed Bluetooth IC. Contact Nothing Support via the Nothing X app (Help → Contact Support) or visit us.nothing.tech/support. Nothing offers individual earbud replacements for approximately $69–$79 USD, and the Nothing Ear (3) carries a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects
