How to Fix In-Ear Detection and Auto-Pause Issues on the Nothing Ear (3)

Causes

  • Optical proximity sensor blocked by earwax, sweat, or skin oils — the Nothing Ear (3) uses a small infrared proximity sensor on the inner face of each earbud stem to detect when the bud is placed in the ear. Over time, natural earwax, sweat residue, and skin oils accumulate on the sensor window, scattering the IR beam and causing false readings. The sensor may fail to detect the ear (music plays even when buds are removed) or falsely detect the ear (music pauses randomly during wear)
  • Moisture or condensation inside the sensor cavity — during workouts or high-humidity environments, moisture can seep past the IP54 seal and form condensation on the IR sensor lens. This creates a refractive barrier that blocks the IR beam, causing the sensor to constantly read "not in ear" and trigger continuous auto-pause cycles
  • Hair, hoodie strings, or hat brims brushing against the sensor window — the sensor is located on the inner face of the stem where long hair, a hoodie drawstring, scarf, or hat brim can intermittently block or reflect the IR beam, tricking the sensor into thinking the earbud has been removed or inserted
  • Loose or insufficiently deep earbud fit — if the earbud stem is not fully seated against the ear's inner contour (the tragus area), the sensor may not make proper contact with the skin. The IR proximity sensor relies on skin reflectance — when there's an air gap between the sensor and the ear, the IR beam reflects differently, causing the sensor to register "not in ear" intermittently
  • Firmware bug in the sensor polling algorithm — early Nothing Ear (3) firmware versions had a known issue where the optical sensor polling rate could become desynchronised from the audio DSP after a phone call or voice assistant activation, causing the sensor to stop reporting changes entirely until the earbuds are reset or re-paired

How to Fix

  1. Clean the optical sensor windows: on the inner face of each earbud stem, locate the small dark semicircular window near the top (the in-ear detection sensor). Wipe it gently with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. For stubborn wax or residue, slightly dampen the cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol (squeeze out all excess — do NOT let liquid drip into the sensor opening) and wipe the sensor window in a circular motion. Allow 60 seconds to air dry completely before reinserting the earbuds
  2. Test with In-Ear Detection toggled OFF: open the Nothing X app on your phone → tap your Nothing Ear (3) → go to Controls → In-Ear Detection → toggle it Off. Play music and remove one earbud. If the music now continues playing without interruption, the sensor was falsely triggering the auto-pause function. If music still pauses randomly with detection off, the issue is not sensor-related — move to the firmware and reset steps below
  3. Adjust your earbud fit for proper sensor contact: reinsert the earbuds with a slight forward twist so the stem sits parallel to your jawline and the inner face of the stem presses gently against the tragus (the small cartilage bump at the front of your ear canal). The earbud should feel snug with the stem making light contact with your skin. If you have small ears, the stock ear tips may not seat deep enough — try the included XS ear tips to allow the stem to sit closer to your ear
  4. Update to the latest firmware: open the Nothing X app → tap the gear icon on your Ear (3) → Firmware Update → Check for Updates. Nothing released firmware version 2.1.0 and later with specific fixes for the in-ear detection sensor polling algorithm, including improved moisture rejection and faster re-calibration after phone calls. Keep the earbuds in the case with the lid halfway open during the update and ensure the case is plugged into power
  5. Disable auto-pause for specific activities: if the false triggering happens only during workouts or windy conditions, open Nothing X → Controls → In-Ear Detection → toggle Off for temporary relief. You can re-enable it later when in a stable environment. The Nothing Ear (3) does not offer per-activity profiles for in-ear detection, so manual toggling is the only per-session workaround
  6. Perform a full factory reset: place both earbuds in the charging case with the lid open. Press and hold the function button on the front of the case for 15 seconds until the LED flashes red three times. Close the lid, wait 10 seconds, then open the lid and re-pair the earbuds with your phone. This clears any sensor calibration data or polling state that may be stuck in the earbuds' firmware after a corrupted sensor reading
  7. Dry out the sensor cavity after workouts: if you use the Nothing Ear (3) during exercise, wipe the inner stem area with a dry microfiber cloth immediately after each session. Place the earbuds in the charging case with the lid open for 30 minutes to allow any trapped moisture to evaporate. Do not use heat (hair dryer, radiator) as this can damage the IR sensor lens or deform the silicone ear tips
  8. If in-ear detection still malfunctions after cleaning, firmware update, and reset, the IR sensor hardware may be defective. Contact Nothing Support via the Nothing X app (Help → Contact Support). The in-ear detection sensor is covered under the one-year limited warranty. Nothing may offer an individual replacement earbud ($69–$79) if the sensor on one side has failed while the other works correctly
