Causes
- Logi Options+ driver dependency for SmartShift — the MX Master 4's MagSpeed Electromagnetic Scroll Wheel relies on the Logi Options+ software daemon running in the background to handle the SmartShift auto-switching between ratchet and free-spin modes. If Options+ is not installed, crashes, or its system service has been disabled, the scroll wheel registers basic clicks but the scroll encoder output is not translated into vertical scrolling events, making the wheel appear completely non-functional on systems without Options+
- macOS system update breaking the HID scroll driver — multiple community reports confirm that macOS 26.3 and later updates reset the Bluetooth HID driver stack's scroll acceleration profile and break the Logi Options+ kernel extension (kext) permissions. After the update, the system treats the MX Master 4 as a generic HID pointing device, disabling the MagSpeed electromagnetic clutch logic and causing erratic scroll behavior (skipping lines, reverse scrolling, or no scroll at all)
- SmartShift sensitivity threshold misconfigured — the MX Master 4's SmartShift clutch mechanism switches between ratchet (notched) and free-spin (frictionless) scrolling based on scroll velocity. If the threshold is set too low in Logi Options+, the wheel enters free-spin mode too easily, making precise line-by-line scrolling impossible. If set too high, the ratchet feels stiff and the wheel never unlocks for fast document navigation
- Dust, debris, or particle buildup inside the scroll wheel encoder assembly — the MagSpeed wheel uses an optical encoder disc with 24 detent positions per revolution. Microscopic dust, pet hair, or skin flakes can accumulate on the encoder slots over time, causing the optical sensor to misread positions. This manifests as random upward scrolling, scroll skipping, or the wheel scrolling in the opposite direction
- Electromagnetic interference from USB 3.0 ports or improperly shielded USB-C cables — the MX Master 4's MagSpeed encoder operates using a low-voltage electromagnetic clutch. Strong electromagnetic fields from adjacent USB 3.0 ports, especially those on unshielded hubs or docks, can induce stray currents in the clutch solenoid, causing the wheel to momentarily engage or disengage the ratchet mechanism at random
How to Fix
- Verify Logi Options+ is installed and running: open your system's application menu and launch Logi Options+. If it does not open, download the latest version from logitech.com/optionsplus and reinstall. On macOS, check that the Logi Options+ process is visible in Activity Monitor (search for "Logi Options" or "LogiMgr"). On Windows, check Task Manager under Background Processes for Logi Options+. If the process is missing, restart your computer after installation — the SmartShift driver does not load until the system service starts on boot
- On macOS, re-grant input monitoring permissions after a system update: go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring. If Logi Options+ appears in the list but the toggle is off, toggle it on. If it does not appear, click the + button and add Logi Options+ from /Applications. Then go to Accessibility in the same Privacy & Security settings and ensure Logi Options+ is also enabled there. Restart the Logi Options+ app (right-click the menu bar icon → Quit, then relaunch from Applications). The scroll wheel should begin working within 10 seconds of the permissions being granted
- Adjust the SmartShift scroll wheel sensitivity: open Logi Options+ → select your MX Master 4 in the device list → click on the SmartShift (scroll wheel) icon in the left panel. Use the "SmartShift Sensitivity" slider to set the threshold to the middle position (the default). Test scrolling in a web browser — if the wheel free-spins too easily, move the slider toward "Firm" (right). If the ratchet feels too stiff and never releases, move it toward "Relaxed" (left). Click "Apply" and test each incremental adjustment until the wheel behavior suits your preference
- Clean the scroll wheel encoder: turn the mouse over and inspect the gap between the scroll wheel and the chassis for visible debris. Use a can of compressed air with a thin nozzle extension — insert the nozzle into the gap on both sides of the wheel and blow short bursts while rotating the wheel manually. For stubborn buildup, use a wooden toothpick or plastic spudger wrapped in a lint-free microfiber cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the wheel edges. Do NOT use metal tools or liquid cleaners that could drip into the encoder assembly. Allow 5 minutes to dry, then test scrolling in a document
- Reassign SmartShift to a different mode: in Logi Options+ → MX Master 4 → SmartShift, change the scroll wheel mode from "Auto-Shift (SmartShift)" to either "Ratchet (Notched)" or "Free-Spin" permanently, bypassing the electromagnetic clutch logic entirely. If scrolling works consistently in either fixed mode, the issue is with the SmartShift detection mechanism, not the wheel itself. Continue using the fixed mode while Logitech releases a firmware patch for the SmartShift algorithm
- Update the MX Master 4 firmware: open Logi Options+ → select your mouse in the device list → click the gear icon (Settings) in the bottom-left corner → scroll down to "Firmware Update" and click "Check for Updates." If a firmware update is available, keep the mouse powered on and connected (via Logi Bolt receiver for stability) during the update — do not move the mouse or turn it off until the process completes. Firmware version 2.1.0 and later specifically address MagSpeed clutch timing issues on the MX Master 4
- Rule out USB 3.0 interference: if you are using the Logi Bolt receiver, plug it directly into a USB 2.0 port (often black or white, not blue) on your computer rather than a USB 3.0 hub or dock. USB 3.0 ports emit electromagnetic noise in the 2.4 GHz band that can interfere with the Bolt receiver's signal. Move the receiver at least 20 cm away from any USB 3.0 cables or external drives. If using Bluetooth, disconnect and re-pair the mouse (see the Bluetooth connection guide) to re-establish a clean 2.4 GHz link without interference
- Logitech G-Hub and Options+ can conflict — if you also have Logitech G-Hub installed for gaming peripherals, the two applications' device drivers can conflict and cause scroll wheel anomalies. Open Logi Options+ Settings → Advanced → disable "Allow Logi Options+ to control system settings" temporarily. If the scroll wheel starts working normally, uninstall G-Hub via Add or Remove Programs and rely solely on Options+ for the MX Master 4. Logitech does not support running both G-Hub and Options+ simultaneously for the same mouse
