Causes

  • Edge-lit IPS panel trait with no local dimming — the 27GP850-B uses LG's Nano IPS panel with a strip backlight along the edges and no local dimming. Light leaks through near the bezel (backlight bleed) and illuminates the corners when you view from an angle in a dark room (IPS glow). This is physically normal for this panel and varies from unit to unit.
  • Low native contrast (~1000:1) — like all IPS panels, black levels are elevated, so in a dark room deep blacks look gray and the faint glow around the edges reads as a cloudy or hazy wash, which the review measurements confirm on this model.
  • Manufacturing / QC variance — owners report some units come out of the box with a noticeably bright "orange cloud" or bleed concentrated in one corner (often lower right), while others are nearly clean. This is unit-to-unit lottery rather than a design flaw, and the worst units are the ones worth exchanging.
  • Panel pressure against the backlight — a too-tight VESA arm clamp, over-tightened screws, or the panel flexing against its housing pushes the LCD into the backlight and creates visible bright blotches that aren't there at normal mounting torque. A monitor with the bezel pressed near the backlight can show artificial bleed that improves when pressure is released.
  • Over-driven backlight at high brightness — at the monitor's higher brightness settings the leak and glow are more obvious because the backlight is simply brighter; running the panel dimmer noticeably reduces how visible both effects are.

How to Fix

  1. Test it properly first — put the 27GP850-B on a pure black full-screen image in a completely dark room, sit straight on at eye level, and reduce the room light. Viewing dead-on minimizes IPS glow, so what remains at center-screen is bleed; the gradient washing toward the corners when you look off-angle is normal IPS glow, not a defect.
  2. Lower the brightness — reduce the OSD brightness to roughly 40–60% for a dark room. Because leak and glow scale with backlight output, dialing the brightness down is the single most effective step and often makes borderline bleed disappear in normal use.
  3. Loosen the mount and check the frame — if the monitor is on a VESA arm, back the clamp screws off slightly so the panel isn't pinched against the backlight, and make sure the bezel isn't pressing into the screen anywhere. Re-tighten gently, then re-check on the black test image.
  4. Reposition your viewing angle and add bias lighting — sit straight in front at or slightly above center height, and add a dim bias light (a small lamp or LED strip) behind the monitor. A little ambient light behind the panel makes IPS glow and bleed dramatically less visible to the eye.
  5. Decide whether to keep it — ask whether the bleed or glow actually distracts you during normal use at a reasonable brightness. If it's only visible on a full-black test screen, keep the monitor; if it's a bright orange cloud or blotch that shows up in real content, plan an exchange.
  6. Exchange extreme units under warranty — for a unit with heavy corner bleed, a bright cloud, or bleed that shows in every-day content, contact the retailer or LG and request an exchange while it's within return/exchange window. LG's policy covers significant bleed, so be explicit that a visible bright patch appears on real content, not just on the black test pattern.
