How to Fix the Pen Not Working on the Huion Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz)

💻 Device: Huion Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz) 🗓 Added

Causes

  • The USB data link is missing or not carrying data — The Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz) drives the pen through a separate data line: in the HDMI or DisplayPort setup you must connect the bundled USB-A to USB-C data cable in addition to the video cable. The screen can display a perfect 4K picture while the pen does nothing if that data cable is unplugged, plugged into a charger, or swapped for a charge-only cable. In the single-cable setup, the USB-C cable must be the full-featured 1.8m cable from the box (USB 3.1 Gen 1 + DP 1.2) — a power-only USB-C cable carries no pen signal.
  • Driver conflict after a Windows or macOS update — Huion's own troubleshooting guide notes that "conflicts may occur when updates are done on your computer, causing your pen to stop working." A Windows feature update or macOS upgrade can invalidate the digitizer driver hook, so the PW600/PW600S pen stops responding even though the display and touch still work.
  • Corrupted or multiple tablet drivers installed — An interrupted install, leftover files from an older Huion driver, or a second tablet driver (Wacom, XP-Pen, etc.) can fight over the EMR input. The Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz) uses PenTech 4.0 with battery-free EMR pens (HV200 chip); if the driver stack is broken, the pen does nothing at all.
  • Faulty USB port, hub, or cable in the chain — The pen signal travels over the USB data line, so a dead front-panel port, a flaky hub, or a damaged cable kills the pen while the monitor portion (HDMI/DP/USB-C video) keeps working. Huion's guide advises connecting directly to a rear USB port on desktops and avoiding adapters whenever possible.
  • Worn nib, dropped pen, or electromagnetic interference — EMR pens are sensitive: a loose or dusty nib can trigger phantom hovering/clicking, and a dropped PW600/PW600S can have a cracked internal coil. Nearby speakers, phone chargers, or wireless adapters can interfere with the pen's electromagnetic resonance and make it behave erratically or stop entirely.

How to Fix

  1. Verify the USB data cable — If you're using HDMI or DP: confirm the bundled USB-A to USB-C data cable is plugged from the Kamvas Pro 27 into the computer (not into a phone charger and not a charge-only cable). If you're on the single-cable setup, use the included full-featured USB-C to USB-C cable. Re-seat both ends firmly.
  2. Check the driver's device status — Open the Huion driver (V20) and confirm it shows Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz) as connected — not "Device disconnected" or "No devices connected." Hover the pen over the active area; the driver should highlight the tablet and the cursor should track. If the driver reports disconnected, continue to the cable/port steps below.
  3. Reinstall the driver cleanly — Uninstall the Huion driver (and any other tablet drivers) via Control Panel → Programs and Features, delete leftover Huion folders in Program Files and Program Files (x86) (on macOS remove them from Applications/Library), restart the computer, then reinstall the latest driver from huion.com/download with the tablet disconnected, drawing apps closed, and antivirus disabled. Reboot and reconnect the display.
  4. Try a different USB port and cable — Plug the USB data cable into another port, preferably a rear port on a desktop. Remove hubs and adapters and connect directly. Swap in a known-good data cable (or the spare full-featured USB-C). On Windows, open Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers, uninstall any entries with a yellow exclamation mark, then restart to re-enumerate.
  5. Inspect and replace the pen nib — Remove the nib with the included clip, blow out any dust inside the pen barrel, and firmly reseat a fresh nib (PN06 standard or PN06F felt). Dust inside the tip is Huion's most common cause of erratic pen behavior — a clean, firm nib fixes many "pen stopped working" cases.
  6. Remove interference and test the second pen — Move speakers, phone chargers, wireless dongles, and other electromagnetic sources away from the display, then test again. The Kamvas Pro 27 (144Hz) ships with two pens (PW600 and PW600S) — swap to the other one to isolate whether the pen itself is damaged (e.g., from a drop).
  7. Test on another computer — Connect the Kamvas Pro 27 to a second PC or Mac (with the driver installed; on Windows you can also test without a driver). If the pen works on another machine, the problem is the original computer's driver or USB ports; if it fails on every machine, the pen or the digitizer board is faulty.
  8. Contact Huion support — Email [email protected] with your serial number (S/N on the back of the unit), order number, OS version, driver version, and a short video showing the cable connections and the pen not responding. If a clean driver install and port/cable swaps don't help, a defective digitizer board or pen is covered under warranty.
