Causes
- Incorrect folder structure on the SD card — The Mission 1 Pro firmware update requires a specific folder hierarchy on the microSD card. The root of the card must contain an "update" folder (all lowercase), and inside that folder must be the firmware binary file (e.g., "M1P_v130.bin"). When extracting the firmware zip file, many archive utilities (especially the built-in macOS Archive Utility and Windows File Explorer's "Extract All") do NOT create the intermediate "update" folder — they extract the .bin file directly to the card root, or they create a nested folder structure (e.g., "M1P_v130/update/M1P_v130.bin"). The camera's bootloader specifically looks for "/update/*.bin" at the root and will not detect the firmware if the folder is missing or misplaced.
- Battery charge too low to complete the update — The firmware update process for the Mission 1 Pro takes 5–7 minutes and writes approximately 180 MB of data to the system flash. If the Enduro battery is below 50% charge, the voltage may drop below the safe threshold during the write-intensive phase of the update (when the bootloader is rewriting the main firmware partition). A power failure during this window will leave the camera with a partial or corrupted firmware image — the camera may fail to boot entirely (bricked) or may boot with missing features and instability.
- Wrong firmware version for your camera model — GoPro released two closely related models: the Mission 1 (standard, 4K Open Gate max) and the Mission 1 Pro (8K60, 50MP, GP3). The firmware files are NOT interchangeable. The Mission 1 firmware ends in "M1_" while the Mission 1 Pro firmware ends in "M1P_". Installing the standard Mission 1 firmware on a Mission 1 Pro causes the bootloader to reject the file (the screen shows "UPDATE" but then immediately switches to "ERR" and powers off). Some users have accidentally downloaded the wrong file from GoPro's support site, especially when the page lists both models side by side.
- SD card formatted in exFAT instead of FAT32 — The Mission 1 Pro bootloader only reads FAT32-formatted SD cards for firmware updates. If your SD card is larger than 32 GB (which most modern cards are), operating systems default to exFAT formatting. The bootloader cannot mount exFAT volumes and simply skips the update check entirely — the camera powers on normally as if no update file is present. Users may incorrectly assume the update was successful or that the camera already has the latest firmware.
- Corrupted firmware download — Intermittent Wi-Fi or browser download issues can result in a partial or corrupted .zip file. The CRC (cyclic redundancy check) built into the firmware file may fail, or the bootloader's signature verification may reject the file. Symptoms include the camera showing "UPDATE" for 1–2 seconds, then rebooting without actually updating, or showing "ERR" immediately.
How to Fix
- Download the correct firmware for the Mission 1 Pro — Go to community.gopro.com and navigate to the Mission 1 Pro support section. Look for the "Firmware Update" article. Verify the filename starts with "M1P_" (NOT "M1_"). The current stable version as of July 2026 is v1.30. Download the zip file over a stable wired internet connection if possible — avoid downloading over public Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot. After downloading, verify the file size matches the size listed on the download page (typically ~190–200 MB). If the file is significantly smaller, re-download.
- Format your SD card to FAT32 using the official SD Card Formatter — Download and install SD Memory Card Formatter from sdcard.org (free, works on macOS and Windows). Insert your microSD card (use an adapter if needed). Launch SD Card Formatter, select your card, choose "Quick Format" and set Format Type to "FAT32". This tool correctly creates FAT32 volumes on cards larger than 32 GB (most third-party formatters refuse). After formatting, verify the card is FAT32 by checking Get Info (macOS) or Properties (Windows) — it should say "MS-DOS (FAT32)" on macOS or "FAT32" on Windows.
- Extract the firmware zip file correctly to preserve the folder structure — The zip file contains the expected folder structure: after extraction, the root of your SD card should contain an "update" folder (all lowercase). Inside that folder should be the firmware .bin file. The correct path is: /update/M1P_v130.bin (or whatever version you downloaded). The WRONG paths look like: /M1P_v130.bin (no folder), /M1P_v130/update/M1P_v130.bin (nested folder), or /UPDATE/M1P_v130.bin (uppercase folder name — the bootloader is case-sensitive). To extract correctly on macOS: double-click the zip to create a folder, navigate into it, verify the "update" folder exists, then drag that "update" folder to your formatted SD card. On Windows: right-click the zip, select "Extract All," ensure "Show extracted files when complete" is checked, then copy the "update" folder to the SD card root.
- Charge the Enduro battery to at least 70% before updating — Connect the camera to a USB-C PD 2.0 charger (the official GoPro charger or any PD 2.0 charger with at least 18W output). Wait until the battery indicator shows at least two bars (approximately 70% charge). For maximum safety, perform the update with the battery at 100% and the camera connected to USB-C power during the entire update process. This ensures that even if the battery sags under load, the USB-C power keeps the GP3 bootloader stable.
- Install the firmware update on the camera — Power off the camera completely (hold the Mode button for 3 seconds, then tap "Power Off" on the touchscreen, or hold the Mode button for 8 seconds for a forced shutdown). Insert the SD card with the correct folder structure. Press and hold the Mode button, then tap the Shutter button once. Continue holding the Mode button for approximately 5 seconds — the screen should turn on and display "UPDATE" in large text. Release the Mode button. The update process will take 5–7 minutes. The screen will show a progress indicator or the GoPro logo. Do NOT press any buttons, remove the battery, eject the SD card, or disconnect power during this process. When the update completes successfully, the camera will power off automatically. Wait 10 seconds, then power on normally.
- Verify the update and clean up — After the camera reboots, go to Setup → About → Firmware Version. Confirm it shows the version you installed (e.g., v1.30). Power off the camera, remove the SD card, and delete the "update" folder from the card (otherwise the camera will prompt you to update again every time you power on with that card inserted). Reinsert the card, power on, and format the card in-camera (Setup → Format SD Card → OK). This ensures the card is clean and properly aligned with the GP3 filesystem for recording.
- Recover a bricked camera from a failed update — If the camera does not power on after a failed update, the bootloader may still be intact. To attempt recovery: ensure your battery is fully charged. Format a different SD card (not the one from the failed update) to FAT32. Create the correct /update/ folder structure with the firmware .bin file. Insert the card into the powered-off camera. Connect the camera to USB-C power (5V/2A minimum). Press and hold the Mode button for 30 seconds — do not release even if nothing appears on screen. If the bootloader is intact, after 15–20 seconds the screen should display "UPDATE" — continue holding for the full 30 seconds, then release. The camera will begin the update process. If the screen remains completely black after 30 seconds, the bootloader itself may be corrupted — contact GoPro Support for a warranty service or replacement. Out-of-warranty repair fees are approximately $199–$249 for a mainboard replacement.
