Causes

  • Incompatible or slow microSD card — The GoPro Mission 1 Pro records at bitrates up to 240 Mbps in 8K60 and 4K240 modes. If your microSD card is slower than V30 / UHS-I U3 / Class A2 rating, the write buffer fills up faster than the card can flush data, causing the entire camera pipeline to stall. Cards from older GoPros (Hero 9/10/11 era V30 cards with slower random write speeds) are often insufficient for the Mission 1 Pro's sustained 240 Mbps constant bitrate. The camera does NOT support V60 / UHS-II cards (it lacks the extra pin row), so inserting a V60 card falls back to UHS-I speeds and can still be too slow if the card's UHS-I performance is poor.
  • Early firmware bugs (v1.00–v1.20) — Multiple user reports on Reddit and GoPro's community forums confirm that firmware versions prior to v1.30 have a recurring bug where the camera freezes immediately after pressing the record button in 8K, 4K120, or any mode above 4K30.   • Corrupted SD card filesystem — If the microSD card has been used across multiple devices (drones, phones, other cameras) without being reformatted in the Mission 1 Pro, the filesystem can become fragmented. The camera's exFAT driver may encounter directory entry conflicts that manifest as a frozen screen or a "SD Card Error" prompt before freezing.
  • Battery voltage sag under heavy load — The Enduro battery's voltage can momentarily dip below the GP3 processor's minimum operating voltage (3.0V) when recording at the highest bitrate modes with less than 20% battery remaining. This causes a brownout-style freeze where the display stays lit but touch and button inputs are completely ignored. The camera may remain in this state until the battery is physically removed.
  • Overheating-induced partial lockup — When the GP3 processor's junction temperature exceeds 85°C, the thermal management system attempts to throttle the clock speed. If the temperature continues to rise beyond the throttle range, the camera enters a protective state where the display remains on (showing the last frame or a frozen preview) but all controls become unresponsive. This is distinct from a full overheating shutdown — the camera looks "on" but does nothing.

How to Fix

  1. Use a confirmed-compatible microSD card — The GoPro Mission 1 Pro requires a microSD card with at least V30 / UHS-I U3 / Class A2 rating. Recommended models: SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC UHS-I V30 A2 (up to 1TB), Samsung EVO Select microSDXC UHS-I U3 V30 A2 (up to 1TB), or Lexar Professional Silver Plus microSDXC UHS-I V30 A2 (up to 1TB). Do NOT use V60 / UHS-II cards — the Mission 1 Pro does not have the physical pins for the second row and they may fall back to unreliable UHS-I speeds. Avoid generic unbranded cards or any card that has been heavily used in dash cams or security cameras (these wear out the NAND and reduce write speed over time).
  2. Format the microSD card in-camera — Insert the card, power on the camera, go to Setup → Format SD Card → OK. This creates the optimal exFAT allocation unit size (128 KB clusters) that the GP3 processor expects. Do NOT format the card on a computer — the operating system may choose a different cluster size that causes buffering stalls. If you must format on a computer, use SD Memory Card Formatter (sdcard.org) and select "Overwrite Format" once, then immediately reformat in-camera before your first recording.
  3. Update firmware to v1.30 or later (manual method) — Download the latest Mission 1 Pro firmware from community.gopro.com. Format your SD card to FAT32 on a computer. Extract the firmware zip file directly to the root of the SD card — the "update" folder MUST appear at the root level (not nested inside another folder). Eject the SD card safely, insert it into the powered-off camera, then press and hold the Mode button. The screen should show "UPDATE" — release the button and wait 5–7 minutes for the update to complete. Do NOT interrupt the process. After updating, remove the SD card, delete the firmware files, reinsert, and format the card in-camera again.
  4. Perform a forced recovery by removing the battery — If the camera is frozen and unresponsive to button presses, open the battery compartment on the right side of the camera (slide the latch down). Remove the Enduro battery completely. Wait 60 seconds (this drains residual charge from the GP3 processor's capacitors). Reinsert the battery firmly until it clicks. Close the compartment. Press and hold the Mode button for 10 seconds — the camera should vibrate briefly and power on. If it does not, connect the camera to USB-C power (5V/2A minimum) and try again. This hard reset clears any transient state in the GP3 processor's memory controller.
  5. Ensure battery charge is above 50% for high-resolution recording — The GP3 processor requires a stable voltage rail for sustained 8K60 and 4K120 recording. If your battery level is below 20%, switch to 4K30 or 1080p60 until you can recharge. For extended recording sessions, keep a spare fully charged Enduro battery ready (the battery is hot-swappable). Charge via USB-C PD 2.0 — 0–80% takes 27 minutes using a PD 2.0 charger. Avoid using the camera while it is actively charging (this adds heat and can trigger voltage instability).
  6. Reduce processing load to prevent thermal freezes — If you are shooting stationary or on a tripod (no active airflow), drop the resolution to 4K60 or 4K30 instead of 8K60. Disable HyperSmooth and Horizon Lock when the camera is on a stable mount — stabilization processing consumes significant GP3 compute resources and generates heat. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the connection menu if you are not using the GoPro Quik app for remote control. These changes reduce the processor load and give the thermal management headroom to prevent partial lockups.
  7. Perform a factory reset for persistent recurring freezes — If the camera continues to freeze after updating firmware and using a compatible SD card, go to Setup → Reset → Factory Reset. This wipes all user settings and returns the camera to its default configuration. After reset, re-apply only essential settings (language, date, video preset) — do not restore from a backup profile, as a corrupted settings file can reintroduce the freezing behavior.
