How to Fix Battery Draining Fast on the GoPro Mission 1 Pro

Causes

  • Recording at maximum resolutions with stabilization enabled — The Mission 1 Pro's GP3 processor draws the most power when encoding 8K60, 4K240, or Open Gate 4:3 modes with HyperSmooth 6.0 and Horizon Lock enabled. Horizon Lock is especially power-hungry because it continuously rotates the sensor readout window. In real-world use, 8K60 recording with boost stabilization can cut runtime to under an hour, versus the 3+ hours the camera achieves at 4K60. If the battery percentage visibly drops every few minutes, high-bitrate recording is the most likely cause.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 left on — When wireless is enabled, the camera keeps its radios active searching for the GoPro Quik app, which wakes the GP3 processor periodically and prevents the camera from entering low-power idle states. A camera left powered on with Wi-Fi connected to your phone in your pocket will drain a full Enduro battery in a few hours without recording a single frame. The Wi-Fi radio is one of the largest standby drains on the Mission 1 Pro.
  • Screen left on with high brightness — The 2.59-inch OLED rear touchscreen is a major power consumer. Leaving the display on while framing shots, reviewing clips, or navigating menus — especially at full brightness — drains the battery noticeably faster than recording with the screen off. The Mission 1 Pro's default screen sleep is also relatively long, keeping the OLED lit between shots.
  • Battery wear from age and charging habits — The Enduro battery (1900mAh) loses capacity with each charge cycle, typically degrading noticeably after 400–500 full cycles. Draining the battery to 0% regularly, leaving it in a hot car, or using a non-PD charger with the wrong voltage/current curve accelerates this wear. A worn battery will show a full charge that drops to 50% after a few minutes of 4K recording — the battery itself is the problem, not the camera.
  • Extreme temperatures — Cold weather (skiing, snowboarding, winter hiking) slows the lithium-ion chemistry inside the Enduro battery, making it appear to drain rapidly — a battery that reads 100% at room temperature can drop to 20% within minutes at -10°C, and recover when warmed. Heat (direct sun, closed car) increases self-discharge and can also cause the camera to draw extra power fighting thermal throttling before shutdown.
  • Charging with the wrong charger or cable — The Mission 1 Pro requires USB-C PD 2.0 for fast charging (0–80% in 27 minutes). Plugging it into an old 5V/1A phone charger, a laptop's standard USB-A port, or a data-only USB-C cable charges extremely slowly or not at all — the battery icon may not move for an hour. A damaged or low-quality USB-C cable can also cause intermittent charging that never completes.

How to Fix

  1. Lower resolution and frame rate for longer runtime — If battery life matters more than maximum quality, drop from 8K60 to 4K60 or 1080p60. The GP3 processor draws roughly 40% less power at 4K60 than 8K60. At 1080p30 the Mission 1 Pro records over 5 hours on a full Enduro battery. Reserve 8K60/4K240 for short deliberate shots — for long-form capture (vlogging, timelapse, interviews), use 4K30 or 1080p60.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using the Quik app — Swipe down on the touchscreen and toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off (or enable Airplane Mode if available in your firmware version). The camera's radios only need to be on when you're transferring media, live streaming, or using the phone as a remote viewfinder. With wireless off, standby drain drops dramatically — a powered-on idle camera can last days instead of hours.
  3. Disable power-hungry features you don't need — Turn off Horizon Lock unless you specifically need horizon leveling, and use Standard stabilization instead of Boost on stable mounts. Disable GPS in the preferences if you don't need location tags on your footage. Set the rear screen to sleep after 1 minute and lower display brightness to about 50%. Each of these changes adds meaningful runtime, and together they can nearly double recording time at the same resolution.
  4. Update the firmware — GoPro's firmware updates (v1.30 and later) include power management improvements that reduce background drain and fix abnormal battery reporting bugs. Connect the camera to the GoPro Quik desktop app to update, or use the manual SD card method (see the Firmware Update Failed guide). After updating, perform a factory reset (Setup → Reset → Factory Reset) and re-pair your phone to clear any corrupted power-management state from older firmware.
  5. Use a proper USB-C PD 2.0 charger and cable — Charge with a USB-C PD charger rated 18W or higher (the official GoPro charger, or any PD 2.0/PD 3.0 wall adapter) and the USB-C cable that came with the camera (or another certified PD cable). 0–80% takes about 27 minutes; full charge about 50 minutes. Avoid charging from laptop USB ports or old 5W phone adapters. If the red charging LED never appears, try a different cable and clean the USB-C port with a dry toothpick or compressed air — pocket lint in the port is a common cause of charging failures on action cameras.
  6. Run a battery health test — Fully charge the Enduro battery, power the camera on with Wi-Fi off, and record a continuous 4K60 clip at room temperature. The Mission 1 Pro should record 3+ hours at 4K60 per spec. If the camera dies in under an hour with conservative settings, or the battery percentage drops in large jumps, the battery is worn — replace it with a genuine GoPro Enduro battery (third-party batteries often lack the correct PD charging profile and can drain faster or swell).
  7. Handle the battery correctly for long life — Store spare batteries at partial charge (40–60%) if you won't use them for weeks, never leave them in a hot car or direct sun, and let a hot camera cool down before charging (charging a warm battery degrades it faster). Remove the battery if you're storing the camera for more than a few days. If a battery swells, bulges, or gets hot while charging, stop using it immediately and dispose of it properly — a swollen battery is a safety hazard.
  8. Power long stationary shoots via USB-C instead of battery — For timelapses, dash-cam-style recording, or any shoot longer than a couple of hours, remove the Enduro battery and power the camera directly from a USB-C PD power bank or wall adapter.
