Causes
- The rev 1.0 M27Q uses a BGR subpixel layout — the first version of the 27" QHD Super Speed IPS panel (the one sold from 2021) arranges its red, green, and blue subpixels in BGR order, not the standard RGB. Windows text antialiasing (ClearType) is tuned for RGB panels, so it renders each glyph against the wrong order, and black text on white looks fuzzy, smeared, or ringed with a faint green/pink fringe. This is the single most-reported text complaint on the original M27Q, and it is purely a rendering-order problem, not a dead panel.
- ClearType is disabled or was tuned on a different monitor — ClearType only sharpens text intelligently when it is enabled and calibrated on the panel it will be used on. If the setting is off, or it was tuned while an older RGB monitor was the primary display, the M27Q's text stays soft even at native resolution.
- Non-native resolution or GPU scaling — running the monitor below/above its native 2560x1440, or letting the GPU scale instead of the display, forces extra interpolation that softens glyph edges on top of the BGR issue and makes the fringing more noticeable.
- Incorrect DPI/font scaling or a small font size — at 27" 1440p Windows default 100–125% scaling renders relatively small glyphs; the sharper subpixel artifacts of BGR are easier to notice on thin strokes. macOS has no equivalent ClearType control, so text can look slightly less crisp on an M27Q without the RGB tuning it expects.
How to Fix
- Enable ClearType on Windows and pick the BGR option — open the Start menu, type ClearType, and run the ClearType Text Tuner. Turn ClearType on, mark your M27Q as the display to tune, and on the page that asks how the text looks, choose the option that appears to have the smoothest, least fringed edges (for a BGR panel this is usually the second sample). Completing the walkthrough rewrites the grayscale gamma for the panel and removes most of the colored fringing.
- Switch scaling to native 2560x1440 — in Windows go to Settings → System → Display and confirm the resolution is set to 2560 x 1440 (Recommended). Remove any custom scaled or 1080p override. If you deliberately run a smaller resolution for performance in a game, enable the monitor's internal scaling on the GPU side only temporarily — for day-to-day text, keep it native.
- Confirm GPU scaling is off / display scaling on — for the desktop use scaling set to the display rather than the GPU where possible, so the panel receives a native 2560x1440 frame without interpolation. In the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin, look for the scaling mode and set it to aspect/center on the display or disable GPU upscaling for the desktop signal.
- Review DPI and font-size settings — set Windows scaling to 100–125% for a 27" QHD and, if text is still thin, increase the OS font/dpi slightly instead of dropping the resolution. Larger, heavier glyphs hide subpixel fringing far better than tiny 9–10pt text.
- Use DisplayPort/HDMI directly (avoid adapters) — a native DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 connection keeps the color and rendering path clean. A loose or low-quality adapter can also smear text edges and is worth ruling out before assuming the panel is at fault.
- Consider the rev 2.0 M27Q if text is your priority — Gigabyte later released the M27Q rev 2.0, which swaps to a standard RGB subpixel panel and largely fixes the fringing. If you have option to exchange under warranty/return and you mainly do text work, the faster, permanent fix is to move to the RGB rev 2.0 unit; on the original there is no panel-level cure beyond tuning.
