How to Fix Backlight Bleeding on the Gigabyte M27Q

Causes

  • IPS panel glow and edge bleed from manufacturing tolerance — the M27Q is a Super Speed IPS (AHVA-style) panel, and like most IPS monitors it can show uneven backlight at the corners and along the edges. A mild, mostly-uniform glow that shifts as you move your head is normal IPS behavior; true bleeding is fixed bright patches visible even head-on. Both are a quality lottery on this model and vary from unit to unit.
  • The bezel/frame pressing on the panel edges — the M27Q's thin black bezel clamps around the panel. If the frame is slightly warped, overtightened, or the panel is mis-seated, it can physically press on the LCD edge and force the backlight to leak into the visible area at the corners, producing concentrated bright spots.
  • Viewing angle amplifying IPS glow — Super Speed IPS panels transmit noticeably more light toward the corners when viewed from an angle or slightly off-center. At typical desk distances the bottom corners of the M27Q often look brighter/greyer; this is glow, not bleeding, and it follows your eye position.
  • High brightness and HDR/black-level modes — at the M27Q's 350 cd/m² typical brightness, plus HDR/DisplayHDR 400 and high contrast/black-level settings, any panel unevenness is more visible. Running near-max brightness with HDR enabled exaggerates both glow and true bleed.

How to Fix

  1. Distinguish normal IPS glow from defect head-on — sit directly in front of the panel at eye level, turn it to a solid dark grey or black full-screen image, and stare straight at the center. If the bright corners fade or shift when you lean left/right and move your head, that is typical IPS glow, not an actual bleed defect. Note whether the bright areas are static bright patches that stay fixed no matter how you move — those are true bleed.
  2. Reseat the front bezel/frame — power down, and gently press along the perimeter of the M27Q's bezel to check for a popped or warped frame. Lightly press the bezel toward the panel at a bright corner; if the bleed visibly reduces, the frame was pinching the panel. Re-seat the frame evenly by pressing around all four edges. Do not over-torque any panel screws if the stand is VESA-mounted.
  3. Reduce brightness and adjust black level — lower the OSD brightness to a comfortable content level (60–80%) and check the OSD's Black Equalizer/black level. On the desktop, running HDR or a high-contrast theme with full-screen dark apps makes bleed most apparent; drop to SDR for ordinary use and keep brightness moderate.
  4. Test in HDR vs SDR — switch HDR off in Windows (Settings → System → Display → Use HDR) and in the OSD. The DisplayHDR 400 mode drives higher backlight and makes corner glow worse; if your bleed only bothers you in HDR, running SDR normally is the practical fix.
  5. Check if it disappears under load/warm-up — IPS backlights still glow a bit more when the panel is cold. Leave the M27Q on for 15–20 minutes with content and re-test. If the patches are uniform warm glow that settles as the panel warms, it is within normal tolerance.
  6. Decide on a warranty exchange for true, static bleed — if you have bright, fixed patches visible straight-on in a room-lit environment even after reseating the bezel, at low brightness, and in SDR, the panel is outside normal tolerance.
