Causes
- Dot skates leave the flat base without full contact — the mouse rocks on corners — The LYCAN 8K ships with 0.70mm PTFE dot skates (a set of small circular feet) in addition to pseudo-full-size skates. One owner on X (@lucidveil_) reported the Lycan 8K "suffers from instability issues. Tried 4 different sets of dot skates and it would just wobble on certain corners." Because dot skates only contact the pad at a few small points, any tiny unevenness in the skate heights or the pad surface lets the mouse rock/teeter on its corners instead of sitting flat, which is felt as instability during aim.
- No base plate — exposed PCB changes how the mouse sits — The LYCAN 8K has no traditional base plate: the underside is an exposed PCB reinforced by a carbon rod. The skate platforms are mounted directly around the PCB cutouts. If a dot skate or its platform is slightly proud or recessed relative to the surrounding plastic, the mouse tips onto whichever skate points touch first. The design saves weight but gives less forgiving geometry than a full base plate when skate heights vary.
- Uneven skate height from manufacturing or reinstallation — The dot skates are thin (0.70mm) and can sit unevenly if the adhesive picks up debris, if a skate is pressed on at an angle, or if the underlying platform has leftover adhesive from a previous set. Mixing the included LOD spacers under some dots but not others also changes individual foot heights — one taller corner makes the opposite corner lift, producing the wobble.
- Soft or uneven pad surfaces exaggerate the rocking — On plush cloth pads the dots sink unevenly into the weave; on hard pads with slight surface imperfections a low dot skate count means the mouse balances on 3–4 points, and any bump or depression under a corner tips the whole mouse. G-Wolves added an extra sensor-adjacent dot skate to stop sensor dragging on spongy pads, but that same sparse-contact layout amplifies pad imperfections.
- Lightweight shell (28.8g) makes instability more noticeable — At ~28.8g there is almost no mass to damp rocking — a heavier mouse with the same skate layout would sink into the pad and mask the teetering, while the ultralight LYCAN 8K tips visibly. Combined with a forward sensor position, even minor rocking changes the sensor's angle and can read as tracking instability on top of the physical wobble.
How to Fix
- Swap the dot skates for the included pseudo-full-size PTFE skates — The most reliable fix: remove all dot skates, clean the skate platforms with a lint-free cloth (make sure no old adhesive or debris remains, since leftover adhesive raises one side), and press the pseudo-full-size PTFE skates on evenly. Full-size skates contact the pad across a large area, distributing the 28.8g weight so the mouse sits flat and cannot rock on corners. Owners who switched reported the instability disappearing entirely.
- Re-seat the dot skates with perfectly even pressure — If you prefer the glide of dots, peel them off, clean every platform and the underside of each dot, and re-press each skate straight down with firm, even finger pressure — one at a time, checking that no dot is proud or tilted. Ensure the dot right next to the sensor lens (added to prevent sensor dragging) is seated flat too, since it is the closest to the front corner where rocking is felt. Wipe the pad surface before testing so no crumb sits under a corner.
- Remove or re-balance the LOD spacers — If you installed the included skate spacers under the dot skates to raise lift-off distance, verify every spacer is the same thickness and that all dots you want raised actually have one. A spacer under one front dot and not the others tips the front corner up. Either spacer all dots evenly (or none), then re-test the wobble — the goal is identical effective height at all contact points.
- Test on a flat, firm surface to isolate the pad — Place the mouse on a hard, flat surface (a glass desk, hard pad, or a known-flat mousepad) with the same skates. If the rocking disappears on the firm surface, your cloth pad's weave or unevenness is the amplifier — flatten the pad (some cloth pads have a raised edge seam or a bump under the mouse area) or switch to a firmer pad. If it still rocks on a flat glass surface, the skate heights themselves are uneven and need re-seating.
- Check the skate platforms for debris or leftover adhesive — Inspect each skate platform under bright light. A speck of dust, a hair, or a previous adhesive ring under a dot raises that corner by fractions of a millimeter — enough to rock a 28.8g mouse. Clean with a microfiber cloth or a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free swab (avoid the sensor lens), let it dry fully, and re-press the skates.
- Try a different brand/set of full-size skates if the included set is uneven — The owner who reported wobble tried 4 different sets of dot skates and still saw rocking — at that point the issue is the dot layout itself, not one bad set. Move to full-size or "pseudo-full-size" skates (several aftermarket makers list Lycan 8K-compatible full-size PTFE feet, e.g. BMK-compatible sets). Full-surface contact is the geometrically guaranteed fix for corner rocking.
