Causes
- LOD set to the lowest 1.0mm setting — The LYCAN 8K offers 1.0mm and 2.0mm lift-off distance options in the mouse.xyz software. Multiple users on r/MouseReview reported that with LOD at the lowest setting, the PAW3955 sensor immediately re-tracks as soon as the mouse touches the pad when you reposition it — the cursor jumps or drifts the instant the mouse lands, even before you intend to move. The sensor's tracking threshold at 1.0mm is so close to the pad surface that micro-vibrations and landing motion register as input. Users confirmed switching to the medium (2.0mm) LOD eliminated the issue entirely.
- Thin dot skates changing the sensor-to-pad distance — The LYCAN 8K ships with 0.70mm PTFE skates in two styles: dot skates and pseudo-full-size skates, plus LOD spacers. The dot skates sit lower, pulling the sensor closer to the pad surface and making the effective LOD tighter and "finicky" — one reviewer noted "I have been trying to run mine with thinner skates as yes the lod is a bit finicky." Any change in skate thickness directly changes how close the sensor lens sits to the pad, so the same LOD setting behaves differently depending on which skates are installed.
- Forward sensor position exaggerates LOD behavior — The LYCAN 8K's PAW3955 is mounted in a forward position (about 64% along the mouse length per EloShapes). Because the sensor sits further from the center of rotation, the same tilt angle when lifting the mouse produces a larger sensor movement, so the cursor reacts more aggressively during lift-off and landing. This makes LOD tuning feel more sensitive than on center-sensor mice and can look like a tracking defect when it is actually geometry.
- Soft or spongy pad surfaces compressing under pressure — On plush cloth pads, the pad surface compresses under the weight of your hand, and the extra dot skate G-Wolves placed right next to the sensor (added specifically to prevent sensor dragging on spongy pads) keeps the lens off the cloth. If the pad is very soft, however, the pad-to-sensor gap shrinks as you press down, and at the lowest LOD the sensor can begin tracking while you are still pressing the mouse into the pad.

How to Fix
- Switch LOD from 1.0mm to 2.0mm in the software — Open mouse.xyz with the mouse connected, go to the sensor settings page, and change the Lift-Off Distance to 2.0mm. This is the fix that resolved the reported "sensor immediately tracking upon placing the mouse down after repositioning" behavior for affected users. The 2.0mm setting adds just enough height before the sensor activates, so landing motion no longer registers as input while still stopping tracking quickly when you lift the mouse. Re-test your flicks and repositioning for a few minutes to confirm the jumpiness is gone.
- Use the included LOD spacers to fine-tune the height — The LYCAN 8K box includes dot-skate spacers specifically for adjusting lift-off distance. If you are running dot skates, place the spacers between the skate and the skate platform to raise the mouse body slightly, which increases the sensor-to-pad gap and effectively raises LOD without changing the software setting. Start with the thinnest spacer and add more only if the sensor still re-tracks on landing.
- Swap to the pseudo-full-size PTFE skates — If you are using the dot skates and the LOD feels too tight, install the included pseudo-full-size PTFE skates instead. They sit marginally higher and distribute the mouse weight over a larger area, reducing how close the sensor lens gets to the pad under pressure. Peel the old dots off, clean the skate platforms with a lint-free cloth, and press the full-size skates on firmly. Keep the LOD spacers in the box for later tuning.
- Verify the sensor center / DPI settings are not amplifying the issue — In the software, check that the virtual sensor center adjustment is at a neutral position and that your DPI is what you expect. The LYCAN 8K's forward sensor position changes the feel of the same DPI versus a center-sensor mouse (users report needing to adjust in-game sensitivity), which can be mistaken for tracking/LOD problems. If your aim feels "off" after switching from another mouse, it is likely the sensor position, not a sensor fault — lower your in-game sensitivity slightly and adjust to the new pivot point.
- Test on a firmer pad surface — If you play on a very soft cloth pad, test the mouse on a harder surface (hard pad, glass, or a desk surface) with the same LOD setting. If the re-tracking behavior disappears on the firm surface, the pad compression is the culprit — either keep the 2.0mm LOD setting or switch to a firmer pad. The extra sensor-adjacent dot skate handles mild sponginess, but extremely plush pads still change the effective gap as you press down.
