Causes
- Competitive Mode (Performance Mode) left enabled — The LYCAN 8K's browser software at mouse.xyz ships with a "Competitive Mode" toggle that unlocks the full sensor scanning and polling performance of the PixArt PAW3955. When enabled, the Nordic 54L MCU and sensor run at maximum internal scan rates and the radio transmits continuously, which roughly doubles power draw. Reviewers measured about 2 days of life in Competitive Mode versus about 5 days at 2000Hz in normal mode — turning Competitive Mode off is the single biggest battery saver on this mouse.
- 8K polling rate selected in software — The LYCAN 8K supports up to 8000Hz in both wired and wireless modes. At 8000Hz the 2.4GHz radio sends up to 8,000 position reports per second, keeping the Nordic 54L radio and MCU awake almost constantly. At 2000Hz the same mouse lasts roughly 30 hours of heavy daily use (about 2 days of 16-hour sessions per reviewer testing), and dropping to 1000Hz or 500Hz extends that further. Every polling step up costs measurable battery life.
- Small 250mAh battery as a weight trade-off — To hit the ~28.8g full-size weight, G-Wolves fitted a 250mAh cell, far smaller than the 500–800mAh batteries found in heavier mice like the Razer Viper V3 Pro or Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2. There is simply less stored energy to spread across the polling and sensor settings, so any high-power configuration (8K + Competitive Mode) drains the battery in a day or two.
- Battery indicator software bug preventing a true full charge — A documented quirk of the LYCAN 8K: while charging in wired mode, the mouse.xyz web software frequently will not update the charge level to 100% unless you switch the mouse to wireless mode and refresh the browser tab. Users who rely on the software reading may think the battery never finishes charging and end up unplugging early, chronically starting sessions at less than full capacity and worsening perceived drain.
- Mouse never entering sleep or LED indicator left active — The LYCAN 8K has a PCB LED that acts as a DPI/battery indicator. If the mouse is left on a desk without the auto-sleep timeout kicking in (or the receiver keeps waking it), the LED and radio continue drawing current overnight. Combined with the small cell, even standby drain becomes noticeable over a few days.
How to Fix
- Turn off Competitive Mode in the G-Wolves software — Open the mouse.xyz web tool (Google Chrome or Edge recommended; it is a browser-based app, not a native installer) with the mouse connected by the 2.4GHz receiver or USB-C cable. Go to the performance/polling settings page and switch Competitive Mode to Off. This is the highest-impact fix: reviewers measured roughly double the battery life with Competitive Mode off — about 5 days at 2000Hz instead of 2 days. If you only enable it for tournament play, remember to switch it back off afterward, because the setting persists until you change it.
- Lower the polling rate from 8000Hz to 2000Hz or 1000Hz — In the same software page, set the wireless polling rate to 2000Hz for everyday use (the community sweet spot — responsive but efficient) or 1000Hz if you want maximum battery life. 8K polling is imperceptible to most players outside of lab latency testing, while the battery cost is substantial. Keep 8000Hz for wired use only, where the cable supplies power and drain is a non-issue.
- Update the mouse firmware — In the mouse.xyz web tool, check the firmware tab for updates. Early production units shipped with firmware that had less efficient power management; G-Wolves pushed updates that improve sleep behavior and battery reporting. Keep the mouse plugged in during the update and do not close the tab until it reports success.
- Verify a true 100% charge using the wireless refresh trick — Charge the mouse with the included USB-C cable until the LED stops blinking, then unplug it and switch to wireless. Open mouse.xyz and refresh the tab — the reported charge percentage should now read 100%. This works around the known charging display bug and confirms the cell is actually full before you start a long session.
- Set the auto-sleep timeout and power the mouse off when idle — In the software's power settings, confirm the auto-sleep (idle timeout) is enabled rather than "Never." When you are done gaming for the day, either let the mouse enter sleep or switch it off using the power toggle on the underside. This prevents overnight standby drain from the LED and radio.
- Use wired mode for long sessions — If you are grinding through an 8+ hour session, plug the LYCAN 8K in with the included ultra-flexible paracord USB-C cable and set the polling rate to 8000Hz. - Replace the battery only if drain persists with a healthy cell — If the mouse still shows dramatically short life (under a day at 2000Hz) after Competitive Mode off, 2000Hz, firmware updated, and a confirmed 100% charge, the 250mAh cell may be defective or have degraded. The battery is user-replaceable — the box includes spare battery adhesive sets, and the underside exposes the PCB. Purchase a replacement from G-Wolves (their shop lists LYCAN batteries) and swap it carefully, re-applying the battery adhesive so the cell stays seated against the PCB.
