Causes

  • Auto white balance over-correcting in changing light — the deep, unrealistic dark-blue sky reported in both Normal and D-Log M happens when the Action 6's AWB keeps re-evaluating as you move between sun and shade (or past mixed light sources). Each re-evaluation shifts the color temperature toward cool, and the blue channel ends up boosted beyond what the scene actually looked like.
  • Default processing lifts shadows and pulls highlights — the Action 6's image pipeline is tuned for a bright, dynamic-range-heavy look: mids are pushed up, shadow detail is lifted, and highlights are pulled down. Owners describe the result as an over-processed "HDR" style — "videos look mushy with lack of structure" — and flat, shifted skies and clouds. It persists even in D-Log M with Color Recovery, because the tonal adjustments are applied before the profile is baked in.
  • Auto exposure and Auto ISO in low light — at night on a brightly lit street (the Las Vegas Strip case), the camera's Auto mode defaults to a long shutter and climbing ISO — one owner found it silently shooting 4K60 Auto — producing hazy footage, completely blown-out light sources, and jittery stabilization. The low-light result is far worse than the preview screen suggests.
  • Variable aperture hunting mid-shot — with the aperture set to Auto, the f/2.0–f/4.0 iris steps up and down as light changes, altering exposure and depth of field (and color rendering) within a single take. That makes the footage hard to grade because the look keeps moving instead of holding steady.
  • Profile/option confusion in the menus — Quality Priority is unavailable in D-Log M, Film Tone and Color Recovery only apply in certain profiles, and Auto WB in Manual mode cannot be adjusted while recording. Users who expected one consistent look end up with scenes that look wildly different from each other, which reads as an inconsistency or "wrong color" problem.

How to Fix

  1. Lock white balance manually — set WB to Manual and dial in the value Auto was showing at your scene (typically 5500–6500 K for outdoor daylight; around 4000 K for indoor mixed light). A fixed WB stops the shifting blue cast — the sky stays the color it actually was, and walking in and out of shade no longer repaints the footage every few seconds. Re-check it if you move between dramatically different lighting environments.
  2. Tame the processing in-camera — open Image Adjustment and drop saturation and vibrancy by 1–2 steps, and lower contrast slightly so the pipeline stops force-lifting mids. If you want maximum control, shoot D-Log M and apply Color Recovery on export inside DJI Mimo, or grade it yourself — never expect the Auto/Normal profile to give a flat, neutral image, because it is deliberately brightened and saturated.
  3. Set exposure and ISO manually for low light — switch to PRO mode: cap ISO to 100–800, pick a fixed shutter (1/60–1/120 for 30 fps), and drop to 4K30 instead of 4K60 at night. This kills the hazy, blown-out look owners saw on the Strip. Use SuperNight only for static scenes — it stacks frames and will blow out moving light sources and introduce stabilization jitter if you pan or walk with it.
  4. Pin the variable aperture — set Variable Aperture to Fixed instead of Auto: f/2.0 for dark scenes, f/2.8 for mixed use, f/4.0 in bright sun. A fixed iris keeps exposure and color consistent through a take so you are not fighting the camera stepping the aperture while you film.
  5. Grade the footage instead of fighting the camera — in DaVinci Resolve, Mimo's editor, or any NLE, start by lowering the mids/shadows (the 6 lifts them aggressively) and pulling the color temperature back toward neutral before touching saturation. The community's fix for the dark-blue sky was exactly this: lower midtones first, then correct white balance, then reduce vibrancy — the sky snaps back to a natural tone and the image keeps its structure.
  6. Check for firmware updates and calibrate expectations — DJI has refined the AE/color pipeline in post-launch firmware builds, so install the latest version (see the Firmware Update Not Showing guide if Mimo will not offer it) and re-test your scene. If a specific color cast persists with WB locked and manual exposure, record a test clip in both Normal and D-Log M, and if the cast is identical in both, open a DJI support case — that points to a sensor tint on the unit itself rather than a settings issue.
