Causes
- Display driven below its native 165Hz refresh — the S2721DGF is a 27" QHD IPS panel rated at 165Hz, but Windows or the GPU can fall back to 60Hz (or a mismatched rate) after a driver update, a cable swap, or a resolution change. At a low or mismatched refresh the panel visibly redraws and can shimmer or flicker, and many owners find that pushing the refresh back to 165Hz is the entire fix, so this is the first thing to check.
- Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync / G-Sync Compatible) fluctuation flicker — the S2721DGF supports both FreeSync Premium and G-Sync Compatible over its DisplayPort input. Like many IPS gaming panels, the backlight can flicker when the frame rate swings rapidly near the bottom of the variable refresh range (roughly below 48–50 fps) or during menu/loading-screen frame drops. If the flicker only happens while Adaptive-Sync is enabled in the OSD, this is the cause.
- Loose, bent, or low-bandwidth DisplayPort/HDMI cable — to carry 2560x1440 at 165Hz the S2721DGF needs a solid DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 link. A partially seated connector, a kinked or worn cable, an old DP 1.1/1.2 cable, or a long adapter chain makes the panel flicker or briefly cut out, especially at maximum bandwidth demand in 1440p/165Hz.
- Outdated or buggy GPU driver — S2721DGF owners commonly see flicker after a Windows update or an NVIDIA/AMD driver that conflicts with the panel, and the issue often resolves with a clean driver update. Real-time overlay or RGB-control apps that force odd refresh cycles can also produce desktop flicker.
- Power delivery from a loaded power strip — the monitor can flicker or dim when it shares a power strip with hungry equipment that drags the supply voltage, a less common but real cause reported on this model. Running the S2721DGF directly off a wall outlet or a surge protector with headroom removes it.
How to Fix
- Set the native 165Hz refresh rate — in Windows go to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the S2721DGF, and set the refresh rate to 165Hz at 2560x1440. If a previously configured rate is causing flicker, step down to 144Hz or 120Hz to see whether the flicker stops and isolates a refresh/cable bandwidth problem. On macOS, confirm the display runs at 165Hz via System Settings → Displays before assuming a fault.
- Toggle Adaptive-Sync in the OSD — press the joystick/menu button, open the Gaming menu, and set Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync) to Off, then check whether the flicker stops during gameplay. If it does, the flicker is VRR fluctuation; you can either re-enable it and cap the frame rate to a stable value above ~60 fps, or leave it off. Also make sure the response time (overdrive) setting is not left in an extreme mode that adds artifacts.
- Reseat and swap the cable, then the port — power down, remove the DisplayPort/HDMI connector from both ends, check for bent pins, and re-seat it fully so the DisplayPort latch clicks. Use a certified, high-bandwidth cable (DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0) and avoid tight bends, kinks, and DP-to-HDMI adapters. Try the other DisplayPort input on the monitor to rule out a bad port.
- Update or cleanly reinstall the GPU driver and close overlays — update to the latest stable driver for your GPU; if flicker persists, use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode and reinstall fresh. Close MSI Afterburner, RGB-control apps, and screen-recording/overlay tools one at a time to find the one forcing the flicker.
- Power-cycle and rule out power issues — unplug the S2721DGF for 30 seconds, then plug it back directly into a wall outlet or a surge protector with spare capacity, away from an overloaded strip. Confirm the panel is not in an odd Eco/standby mode and that its input is set to the cable you are using.
- Factory-reset the OSD and test on another device — choose the factory reset option in the OSD, then connect another PC, laptop, or console on a known-good cable. If the monitor still flickers at every refresh rate and on a second device, the panel/board is faulty and should go under warranty; if it does not flicker, the fault is on the PC side (cable, driver, or GPU output).
