Causes
- The Fast Pair popup was dismissed or never appeared — the CARD Point pairs through Google's Fast Pair "half-sheet" popup that slides up when you press the button on the card. Chipolo's support documentation notes the most common failure is tapping elsewhere on the screen and dismissing that popup, which cancels the pairing flow. If Bluetooth or Location is off, the popup never appears at all, because Fast Pair needs both radios active to detect the nearby card.
- "Scan for nearby devices" is disabled in your Google account settings — Fast Pair detection is gated by the "Scan for nearby devices" toggle under Google device settings. If it's off (it's off by default on some Android skins and gets turned off by aggressive battery optimizers), your phone silently ignores the CARD Point's advertisement even when you press the button, and no popup ever shows.
- The CARD Point is already paired to another Google account — once a CARD Point is paired to a Google account it stays locked to that account until it's removed from the Find Hub app or factory reset. Owners who buy secondhand cards or try to add the same card to a second phone hit "Chipolo Locked" or a pairing failure because the card refuses a second owner — Chipolo's support pages document this exact lock behavior.
- A transient Bluetooth handshake failure ("Oops, something went wrong") — the CARD Point's pairing handshake can fail mid-flow if the phone's Bluetooth stack is busy, the card's button was pressed again during pairing, or the phone has too many stale Fast Pair entries. Chipolo's troubleshooting article for "Oops, something went wrong" confirms that a simple Retry or a Bluetooth toggle-off/on usually clears it.
- The phone lacks Google Play Services or runs an unsupported OS — the CARD Point requires Android 9+ with Google Play Services present and working. Phones sold without Google services (or with services installed manually) won't show the Fast Pair popup and the Find Hub app has limited or no functionality — Chipolo's compatibility article calls out these devices explicitly.
How to Fix
- Turn on Bluetooth and Location, then press the button again — swipe down from the top of the screen and enable both Bluetooth and Location (Fast Pair needs both). Place the CARD Point next to the phone and press the button on the card once — you'll hear a beep. The half-sheet popup should appear within a few seconds; tap Connect to complete pairing. This clears the two most common causes of a missing popup.
- Tap Retry on the "Oops, something went wrong" error — if you hit this error mid-pairing, Chipolo's official fix is to simply tap Retry to restart the pairing process, which usually succeeds immediately. If it fails again, toggle Bluetooth OFF for 30 seconds, turn it back on, and press the card's button to retry — this resets the phone's Bluetooth stack and clears a stale handshake.
- Enable "Scan for nearby devices" — open Settings → Google → Devices and sharing → Devices and make sure the Scan for nearby devices toggle is on. You can also go to Settings → Connected devices and check whether the Chipolo appears in the list near the top — if it does, tap it directly to start pairing without waiting for the popup.
- Check Connected devices and pair from there — swipe down and tap the Bluetooth tile to open Connected devices. The CARD Point should be listed just below the title while it's advertising. Tap the Chipolo entry to start the pairing process manually — this bypasses the popup entirely and works when the popup is being blocked by the launcher or a screen overlay.
- Factory reset the card to clear a stale pairing or lock — press and hold the button on the CARD Point for 30 seconds. The card begins beeping in 1-second intervals; release the button right after the 5th beep, and you'll hear a confirmation sound when the reset completes. The card is now unpaired from the Google account and can be added fresh. If you bought the card used, do this before pairing so it isn't locked to the previous owner's account.
- Remove it from the old account if the card was already paired — if the CARD Point belongs to your own account but won't re-pair, open the Find Hub app, find the card, and remove it from your account first (Find Hub → the card → settings → Remove). Then re-add it by pressing the button. If it still shows "Chipolo Locked" after a factory reset, contact Chipolo support at [email protected] with a screenshot — their team can unlock it server-side.
- Restart the phone and wait for services to settle — if none of the above works, press the card's button and wait up to 60 seconds for it to fall back asleep (you'll hear a beep when it does), then power the phone off, turn it back on, and wait 2 minutes for Google services to finish starting. Place the card next to the phone, press the button, and the popup should now appear — this is Chipolo's documented longer recovery procedure.
- Verify the phone is supported — confirm the phone runs Android 9 or newer with Google Play Services (most phones do). If the phone was bought without Google services or they were sideloaded, the CARD Point simply won't pair — check compatibility at chipolo.net/point-devices or pair the card with a supported phone instead.
