Causes

  • Multipoint contention interrupting the audio stream — With two phones or a phone and a laptop connected over Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint, notifications, calls, or media from the secondary device can interrupt and re-compress the primary audio stream. The result is periodic crackling, distortion, or pause-and-resume artifacts even when connection strength looks fine.
  • 2.4 GHz wireless interference — Bluetooth uses the 2.4 GHz band that Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, wireless speaker adapters, security motion sensors, fluorescent lighting, microwaves, and wireless mice and keyboards also use. When these devices contend for the same channel, the buds introduce static or intermittent dropouts on top of otherwise clear audio.
  • The source device's audio enhancements fighting the DSP — Smartphones and computers apply their own Bass Boost, Treble, Loudness, or spatial audio processing. Stacked on top of the buds' CustomTune equalization, this double-processing can introduce distortion, especially at high volume, because the combined boosting clips the signal.
  • EQ set too aggressively in the Bose app — The in-app equalizer drives the buds' DAC output. Pushing bass or treble sliders very high linearizes into clipping and distortion, and can also make the driver behave erratically at loud volumes where it is already near its excursion limit.
  • Wind or noise feeding the external mics in Aware mode — In Aware (transparency) mode, the external microphones continuously stream ambient sound into your ears. Strong wind, a fan, or rushing air over the mic openings is picked up and amplified as noise or artifact, which reads as static even though the actual audio path is clean.

How to Fix

  1. Toggle multipoint off then on — In the Bose app, open the product's Bluetooth Source screen and turn Multi-point Connection off. If the crackling and pauses disappear, the secondary device was the culprit. Leave multipoint off when you need clean audio, or re-enable it and disconnect the idle device from its own Bluetooth settings.
  2. Move away from interference sources — Relocate the buds and the source device away from the Wi-Fi router, microwave, or wireless peripherals, or switch the router to the 5 GHz band if possible. Disconnect interfering 2.4 GHz devices one at a time and check when the static clears. If the audio is clean in a different room, the environment, not the buds, was the cause.
  3. Flatten the source device's audio processing — Go to your phone or computer sound settings and turn off Bass Boost, Treble, Loudness, and any built-in equalizer or sound effect, or set them to a neutral position. This lets the buds apply their own CustomTune-optimized profile without double-processing that causes clipping and distortion.
  4. Reset the Bose app equalizer to neutral — Open the Equalizer settings in the Bose app and return Bass and Treble to 0, then raise them in small increments to taste. Keep adjustments gradual, especially at high listening volume, to avoid pushing the driver into clipping.
  5. Reboot the earbuds — A reset does not erase your settings or paired devices. Clear the buds' DSP state by putting them in the case, closing the lid for 10 seconds, and removing them again. When live, test with a standard music track on a quiet volume to separate a software glitch from a hardware fault.
  6. Switch noise-cancelling mode or clean the mics for wind noise — If the artifacts appear specifically outdoors or near a fan, switch from Aware mode to Quiet (full ANC) or Immersion mode so the external mics stop streaming ambient wind. Gently wipe the tiny mic grills on the outer face of each bud with a dry, lint-free cloth. Persistent static through every mode and source after a reset points to a hardware or firmware fault, so run any pending firmware update, then contact Bose Support under the 1-year warranty with the bud's serial number.
