How to Fix the AYN Thor Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting and Reconnecting

💻 Device: AYN Thor 🗓 Added

Causes

  • A known Wi-Fi stability issue on early Thor units — multiple owners in the AYN Thor / Odin community reported their Thor repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting to Wi-Fi, in a continuous cycle, even after formatting the device and trying every setting they could think of. When a factory reset doesn't stop the dropouts, it points to a firmware-level connectivity bug rather than a configuration problem on your end.
  • Wi-Fi 7 network quirks — the Thor is one of the first handhelds with Wi-Fi 7, and the early firmware had trouble on Wi-Fi 7 networks: the device froze during the first screen-mirroring attempt after a factory reset when connected to a Wi-Fi 7 network. AYN fixed that specific freeze in OTA build 1.0.0.293, but Wi-Fi 7 routers with aggressive features (MLO, 6 GHz band steering) can still trigger instability on the Thor's radio.
  • Router band steering and power-save settings fighting the radio — routers that steer devices between 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands, or that enable Wi-Fi power-save modes, can cause the Thor to drop the connection when it hops bands or idles. The Android Wi-Fi stack on the Thor also aggressively scans and re-evaluates networks, which amplifies the problem on routers with short lease times or isolated guest networks.
  • A corrupted network stack after updates or restores — a bad OTA install, a restored backup, or repeated connect/disconnect cycles can leave the Thor's network stack in a broken state where it keeps re-authenticating to the access point. This shows up as the Wi-Fi icon cycling on and off every few seconds with no change in signal strength.
  • Weak signal at the device's position — the Thor's Wi-Fi 7 radio needs a solid signal, and on 6 GHz the range is shorter than 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. If the Thor is in a bag, behind a closed lid, or far from the router, the connection can flap repeatedly, especially during sleep or downloads.

How to Fix

  1. Update the Thor's firmware — go to Settings → System → Thor OTA and install any available update. Build 1.0.0.293 already fixed the Wi-Fi 7 screen-mirroring freeze, and later builds have continued to address connectivity issues — this is the first thing to do, since most early Wi-Fi problems were firmware-side.
  2. Forget the network and reconnect — open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the network, choose Forget, then reconnect and re-enter the password. This clears any corrupted key material or cached session on the Thor and forces a fresh association with your router.
  3. Disable Wi-Fi 7 / use Wi-Fi 6 or 2.4 GHz for the Thor — in your router's settings, disable Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) features for the Thor's connection or globally: turn off MLO (multi-link operation) and 6 GHz band, or create a dedicated SSID that the Thor connects to on 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6 (or 2.4 GHz for maximum stability). Owners have found the Thor holds a rock-solid connection on Wi-Fi 6 while it flaps on Wi-Fi 7.
  4. Fix the router side — log into your router and disable band steering (or give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands separate SSIDs so the Thor stays put), turn off any Wi-Fi power-save / "Wi-Fi Agile Multiband" option, make sure the Thor isn't on a guest network or behind AP/client isolation, and update the router's firmware. If your router has per-device controls, set the Thor to 5 GHz-only.
  5. Adjust the Thor's Wi-Fi power settings — go to Settings → Developer options and set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to Always (if present), and disable Wi-Fi scanning throttling if your build has it. Also check Settings → Battery — if battery saver is on, it can force Wi-Fi to drop; exclude the Thor's Wi-Fi from any aggressive power-saving mode.
  6. Reset network settings and reboot the router — reboot the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, and on the Thor go to Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth (this clears saved networks without wiping your apps). Reconnect afterward. Note that a full factory reset alone did not fix the dropouts for some owners — the firmware update in step 1 is the actual cure.
  7. Contact AYN support if the cycle persists — if you're on the latest firmware, the router is set to Wi-Fi 6 with band steering off, and the Thor still cycles through disconnects, the Wi-Fi module may be faulty. Email [email protected] with your order number, firmware version, and a description of the network setup — AYN support has been responsive to Thor Wi-Fi complaints and will arrange a repair or replacement under warranty.
