Causes
- OLED image retention on the AMOLED panels — the Thor's 6" main and 3.92" bottom AMOLED screens show a faint, ghost-like outline of whatever bright image was displayed last. It's a form of image retention: the pixels don't switch off cleanly after showing a still picture, so a shadow of the old image stays visible for a while. One owner shared a Reddit video of a bright logo leaving a visible ghost on the top screen after only a few seconds.
- Anything bright or white gets "stuck" almost instantly — on the Thor, the ghosting is stubborn: owners report that white elements, logos, and HUDs leave retention immediately, and the ghost image changes to match whatever was last on screen. Special screen-clearing tests (JScreenFix-style pixel refreshers) help only partially — users found the images did not go away completely.
- Lower-quality OLED panels in some production batches — the retention on the Thor is noticeably worse than on other OLED handhelds with similar screens, like the Retroid Pocket 5. This points to cheaper or mixed-grade panels being used in at least some units — possibly leftover panels from other product runs, which can show premature retention even when technically new.
- High brightness plus long static content accelerates it — leaving menus, game HUDs, launcher screens, or a bright logo on either screen for long stretches at high brightness makes the retention appear faster and linger longer. The dual-screen layout makes this easy to trigger accidentally — for example, a game with a bright static HUD on the top screen while you play on the bottom.
- AYN support initially dismissed the reports — owners who contacted support were told the ghosting was not a defect (some were told it was a watermark). That response didn't hold up because the ghost image changes to match the last content displayed, which is how retention behaves — not how a watermark behaves. This leaves many owners unsure whether they can get a replacement.
How to Fix
- Lower the brightness and turn on auto-brightness — keep both screens below ~60% brightness when possible and enable adaptive brightness in Settings → Display. Retention forms fastest at high brightness with static white content, so dimming the panels is the single most effective prevention.
- Keep static content off the screens — set a short screen timeout (Settings → Display → Screen timeout, 30-60 seconds), and avoid leaving launchers, menus, or game HUDs frozen on either screen. When a game shows a persistent bright HUD, pause and let the screen sleep between sessions.
- Install the latest firmware via Thor OTA — go to Settings → System → Thor OTA and update. OTA build 1.0.0.293 fixed a related display bug (random lines appearing at the edge of the screen when launching JScreenFix), so update before relying on any screen-clearing app, and the newest builds may include panel-driving tweaks.
- Run a pixel-refresh video on the affected screen — play a full-screen cycling-color or "pixel fix" video (JScreenFix or similar) on whichever screen shows retention for 10-15 minutes, then turn the screen off and let the panel rest. On the Thor this clears mild retention partially — don't expect a perfect result on severe cases, but it helps with fresh, light ghosting.
- Give the panel time to recover — mild retention fades on its own if you avoid re-triggering it: show varied, moving content or leave the screen off for a while. If the ghost disappears after rest and only returns after long bright sessions, it's within the range of normal OLED behavior — manage brightness and static content and keep using the device.
- Document the issue with photos and video — if retention is severe or permanent (visible minutes after the image changes, on both screens, at normal brightness), record clear photos and a video showing the ghost image following the content. You'll need this evidence for support and any return claim.
- Push AYN support for a replacement — contact [email protected] with your order number, photos, and video. If support repeats the "not a defect" line, point out that the ghost tracks the last displayed image (retention, not a watermark) and reference that other OLED handhelds don't show this level of ghosting. Some owners have had to escalate through the AYN Discord before getting a replacement or refund.
- Fall back to a return or chargeback if needed — if AYN won't offer a replacement or refund and the ghosting is unacceptable, return the device through the retailer, or open a dispute through your payment provider (PayPal buyers have successfully disputed Thor units with screen defects). Act within your return window and keep all support correspondence as evidence.
