Causes
- Known quality-control issues with the stock fan model — the fan used in the Thor has had noticeable QC variance between units. Owners report a buzzing or whirring that gets louder or changes character when the device is moved, which points to bearing play in the fan itself; AYN has been sending replacement fans to affected owners rather than treating it as normal operation.
- Fan bearing wear or debris — a dry or badly seated bearing produces a grinding, rattling buzz, and on a brand-new handheld a hair or fiber wrapped around the fan hub is a common culprit. Dust buildup over time does the same thing and makes the fan work harder.
- The fan ramping hard under emulation loads — the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 generates serious heat during PS2, GameCube, and Wii emulation, so the fan spins up aggressively. If the thermal paste contact is poor or the fan curve is set to performance mode, the fan runs faster and louder than it needs to for the actual load.
- Resonance with the thin clamshell chassis — at certain RPMs the fan frame vibrates against the Thor's plastic shell, turning a normal hum into an annoying buzz. This is why the noise can appear and disappear at different load levels or when you hold the device differently.
- Firmware fan-control regressions — after OTA build 1.0.0.360 some units started running the fan constantly during sleep while charging, which added noise the unit didn't have before. AYN's fan-related updates have changed this behavior, so the firmware version matters when diagnosing.
How to Fix
- Check for an OTA update first — go to Settings → System → Thor OTA and install the latest build. AYN has released updates that change fan behavior (including the sleep-while-charging fan regression from 1.0.0.360), so update before assuming the fan is defective.
- Adjust the fan settings in Odin Settings — look for the fan/performance control (Smart, Quiet, and Performance modes or a manual fan curve). Set Smart or Quiet for lighter games and Android apps, and only switch to Performance when a demanding emulator actually needs it — this alone fixes "fan is too loud" on many units.
- Test for the sleep-charging fan behavior — if the noise happens mainly when the lid is closed and the unit is charging overnight, reboot the Thor after unplugging and update to the newest OTA. If the fan still runs constantly in sleep on the latest build, mention that specific behavior when you contact support — it's a known firmware quirk.
- Clean the fan — power the Thor off, carefully remove the back panel (teardown guides for the Thor are available online), and blow out the fan with compressed air. Check for hair or fibers wrapped around the hub and remove them with tweezers, then gently re-seat any loose fan screws — a loose screw amplifies the vibration buzz more than you'd expect.
- Replace the fan — the fan's model number is printed on the unit, and step-by-step AYN Thor fan replacement guides are available online; the swap needs only basic tools and is a common fix in the community. - RMA the device if the noise is severe and constant — a grinding or clicking fan that never quiets after cleaning, updating, and curve changes points to a bad bearing.
