Causes
- Firmware 1.0.0.360 changed how the Thor reads battery voltage — after the update rolled out, owners on Reddit reported the battery indicator going haywire: percentages suddenly plummeting from 40% or higher straight down to 1%. AYN's engineering team traced the bug to a display inaccuracy that happens after device restarts — the new build reads the battery's voltage differently internally, which threw off the calibration on many units. The battery itself is not actually damaged.
- The Thor forgets its voltage calibration data on a full shutdown — the standard recalibration fix (drain to 0%, charge back to 100%) only holds until you power the device down completely. Users found their Thor working perfectly after calibrating, then instantly dropping back to 1% after the next shutdown — the device loses the voltage data whenever it powers off all the way.
- Android thinks the battery is dead and throttles performance — once the meter reads 1%, Android treats the battery as dying and limits CPU/GPU performance accordingly, which makes games practically unplayable. Some units stay stuck at 1% for hours before the battery actually dies, while others show rapid drain where the meter simply can't keep up with real usage.
- The same update also changed sleep/charging fan behavior — after 1.0.0.360, some users reported the fan running constantly during sleep mode while charging (never mentioned in the changelog), and in some cases this extra runtime triggered the "lightsaber" fan noise on units that didn't have it before. It's a related power-management regression from the same firmware, not a separate hardware fault.
How to Fix
- Check for a new OTA update first — go to Settings → System → Thor OTA and check for updates. AYN confirmed a fix for the battery-reading problem was in development and pushed it out via OTA; installing the corrected build is the only permanent cure, so install it as soon as it appears and skip the workarounds below.
- Do a full battery recalibration — use the Thor until it drains to 0% and shuts itself off, then charge it uninterrupted (same charger, no gaming while charging) back to 100%. This re-syncs the voltage reading and restores an accurate meter — but remember it only sticks until the next full shutdown, so combine it with the next step.
- Avoid shutting down or restarting the Thor — after recalibrating, don't power the device off completely. Instead, close the lid and let it sleep when you're done, or let the battery drain naturally during normal use. Multiple owners confirmed this is what keeps the battery meter accurate while waiting for the fix OTA — every full shutdown resets the bug.
- Roll back to firmware 1.0.0.293 if the bug is crippling — email AYN support ([email protected]) and ask for the 1.0.0.293 download link; they have been sending it to affected users. Install it through Settings → System → Thor OTA → local update. Fair warning: the downgrade wipes the device completely, so back up your saves, ROMs, and app data first.
- Check battery usage for rogue apps while you wait — open Settings → Battery and look for any app drawing unusual power (a misbehaving emulator frontend or background sync job can make the rapid-drain readings worse). Force-stop or uninstall anything suspicious until the firmware fix lands.
