Causes
- The OLED panel's low-brightness color shift, made worse by the Portal's brightness curve — The Portal's 7" 1080p OLED shifts toward green on dark and grey content when the brightness slider drops below roughly 35–40%. This is a trait of the panel's driver at low PWM levels, but on the Portal it's more aggressive than on most other OLED handhelds: owners describe the screen going from looking fine to clearly green "in one step" right around the 38–40% brightness mark, which points to a brightness-curve/driver tuning issue on top of the panel's inherent behavior. It is the single most-reported Portal display complaint and shows up on grey backgrounds, in dark menus, and during night-time game streaming.
- Firmware versions before the green-tint OTA fix — AYN shipped updates that specifically addressed the low-brightness green hue (the fix was announced on their Discord as coming in an OTA). Units still running early firmware such as 1.0.0.130 show the tint far worse, and owners who updated reported it getting better or disappearing entirely. The Portal also has a known green tint that appears when switching between 60Hz and 120Hz on some firmware builds.
- Panel lottery — some screens are far worse than others — Community reports (including Retro Game Corps' coverage) note that the green tint varies a lot between units. Some Portals are almost clean at low brightness while others are "basically unusable" at the lowest setting. This unit-to-unit variance suggests binned or lower-grade OLED panels in at least some production batches, so a severe tint can be a panel-quality defect rather than a universal firmware quirk.
- Android's system tint "match wallpaper" setting adding to the effect — The Portal runs stock Android 13, which includes a feature that tints system buttons and UI surfaces to match the wallpaper or accent color. On dark content this can stack a greenish cast on top of the panel's own low-brightness shift, making the tint look worse in menus and launchers than it is in games.
- A genuinely faulty panel showing a completely green screen — A small number of owners report the screen going fully green (not just a hue on greys) at low brightness, or a persistent green tint that doesn't change with brightness at all. When the whole screen turns green regardless of the brightness slider, the panel itself is defective and no software setting will correct it — those units need a warranty replacement, not a workaround.
How to Fix
- Update the firmware via Odin FOTA — Go to Settings → System → Odin FOTA → Check Version and install any available update (the Portal updates over the air and reboots automatically). AYN explicitly stated the low-brightness green tint fix was shipped in an OTA update, and owners on the latest build report the tint is reduced or gone, including when switching refresh rates. If you're on an older build (e.g. 1.0.0.130), updating is the first and most likely fix.
- Keep the brightness slider above the tint threshold (around 40–50%) — Find the point where the screen starts flickering or shifting green as you lower brightness (on most units it's around 38%). Keep the main brightness slider just above that point. Dark content below the threshold will then render normally, since the tint only kicks in under the flicker point — this is the core of the community-approved workaround.
- Use Android's Extra dim to go darker without triggering the tint — With brightness set above the threshold, open Settings → Accessibility → Extra dim and turn it on (if the screen doesn't visibly dim, reboot once, then toggle it again). Tap the Extra dim text to open its intensity slider and set it to your preferred night-time level. This dims the panel through a software overlay instead of dropping the backlight into the green zone, so you get low brightness without the green cast. Optionally add the Extra dim tile to the quick-settings shade via the pencil icon for one-tap toggling.
- Check the refresh-rate-dependent tint — If the green tint appears or worsens when you switch between 60Hz and 120Hz, try locking the display to one refresh rate (in the display settings) and see which one looks cleaner on your unit. On some firmware builds the tint differs per refresh rate, and staying on the cleaner one is an immediate improvement while you wait for an update.
- Disable the system tint that matches the wallpaper — In Android settings, look for the system accent/tint option that matches UI colors to the wallpaper (under display/wallpaper settings on the Portal's Android 13 build) and turn it off. This removes the software greenish cast that stacks on top of the panel tint in menus, launchers, and the quick-settings shade.
- Rule out a defective panel before accepting the workaround — Set brightness to 100% and then to minimum on a pure grey or dark background (a grey test image, not an app). If the screen goes fully green — not just a hue on greys — or the tint persists identically at every brightness level, the panel is faulty. A normal unit shows the tint only at low brightness on dark/grey content.
- Contact AYN support or Discord for a replacement if the panel is defective — If the screen is completely green at low brightness or the tint is severe at all levels, reach out to AYN via [email protected] or their Discord (the community and support team are most responsive there), with a short video showing the tint at different brightness levels. AYN has replaced units with defective panels under warranty; owners who documented the issue with a video got the fastest responses.
