Causes
- A known firmware bug where the screen stays black while the device is actually running — Multiple Portal owners report the unit powering on with the LED stick lights, fan, and charging light working, but the main screen staying completely black with no backlight. You can sometimes hear sounds when pressing buttons. AYN acknowledged this as a bug: turning the Portal off and back on clears it, and a firmware update shipped specifically to fix it. It also tends to reappear when the device has been sitting powered down for more than about 10 minutes.
- Deep battery discharge after the device sits unused — If the Portal is left off until the battery is fully drained (or arrives from shipping with a dead battery), the screen can take a long time to come back — owners report needing an hour or more of charging, with the device power-cycling in the background while the display stays black even though the charging light is green. The battery management system refuses to fully boot the screen until the battery recovers enough voltage.
- Charging Separation (Odin Tools) bugs that leave the device in a bad state — The Portal's Odin Tools charging-separation feature (which pauses charging between set percentages, e.g. off at 20% / on at 80%) has known issues: owners report the device silently not charging at all with CS enabled, and after toggling it off and restarting, the screen failing to come back on. The community consensus is that CS on this device is unreliable and should be left off.
- An incompatible or underpowered charger causing a charging/display fault — The Portal is sensitive to its charger: with the wrong power brick it can keep disconnecting and reconnecting while charging, and in some cases the screen won't come on until the charger is swapped. Using the official 30W+ charger (or another PD charger that properly negotiates) is the first thing support asks about.
- A failed display panel or display cable (hardware fault) — If the screen stays black but the device boots fine to an external display, the panel itself or its ribbon cable is faulty. Owners who hit this permanently (not just after sleep) had to get the screen replaced under warranty — the Portal's screen replacement involves disassembling the whole device, so this is very much a support/RMA job rather than a DIY fix.
How to Fix
- Force a full power-off and reboot — Press and hold the power button for 15+ seconds until the stick LEDs go out (a short press or a 3-second hold often isn't enough when the screen is black). Then press power once to boot normally. This is the fix for the known black-screen bug: if the device was merely stuck with the screen off, it boots straight back up with the display working.
- Charge with the official (or a high-quality PD) charger for 30–60 minutes, then wake it — Plug in the included cable with a 30W+ PD charger and wait — don't just tap the power button repeatedly. The green charging light means it's charging; after half an hour to an hour (longer if the battery was fully dead), hold power + volume up (or power + volume down) for several seconds to force a wake. If the screen still won't come on but the device is clearly powered (fan/LEDs), jump to step 3.
- Test with an external display over USB-C — Connect the Portal to a monitor or TV with a USB-C to HDMI cable/dock. If the Portal's UI appears on the external display while the built-in screen stays black, the device itself is fine and the panel or its cable is the problem — that's a hardware RMA, not a software issue. If nothing appears externally either, the device isn't booting and the fault is deeper (battery, firmware, or board).
- Update the firmware via Odin FOTA — If you can get the device to boot at all, go to Settings → System → Odin FOTA → Check Version and install any available update. AYN shipped an update that specifically fixed the random black-screen-won't-reboot bug, so being on the latest build prevents the issue from recurring.
- Disable Charging Separation in Odin Tools — Open Odin Tools and turn off Charging Separation (or any charge-limiting feature), then restart the device. Given the known CS bugs on the Portal — including the device silently not charging — leaving it enabled risks both charging failures and the stuck-black-screen state. The community recommendation is to keep CS off until AYN fixes it.
- Try to wake the screen through the touch layer before assuming hardware failure — If the backlight is off but the screen is responsive, swipe down from the top or tap around where the quick-settings shade should be — one owner recovered a black-screened Portal this way (widgets appeared and the device became usable again). This only works when the screen is in a sleep-like state rather than truly off, but it's worth 30 seconds before opening the device.
- Contact AYN support for a warranty repair if the screen stays black — If none of the above brings the display back — especially if an external display works but the built-in screen doesn't, or the device power-cycles without ever showing an image — contact AYN via [email protected] or their Discord with a short video showing the behavior (LEDs/fan on, screen black). Screen and battery faults on the Portal are covered under warranty, and owners who sent a video got replacement screens or units arranged. Don't attempt the full-disassembly screen replacement yourself — it requires taking the entire device apart and AYN's own teardown guidance is minimal.
