Causes
- Hall-effect sticks that need (re)calibration after a firmware update — The Odin 2 Portal uses Hall-effect joysticks, which detect stick position magnetically instead of with physical potentiometers. The controller firmware stores a center-point calibration, and after an OTA update (Settings → System → Odin FOTA) or after the sticks are jostled in shipping, that stored center can be slightly off. The stick then reports a few percent of input while sitting untouched, which reads as drift in games and in menus. AYN's own calibration screen exists precisely because this happens — community reports of "my Portal drifts after the update" are almost always fixed by running it.
- The default stick sensitivity is too high for the Portal's taller sticks — The Portal's sticks are noticeably taller than the Odin 2's with a much wider range of motion. At the default 100% sensitivity, tiny finger tremors, resting thumbs, or the stick cap touching your thumb pad register as input, which feels like drift or twitchy aiming. This is the single most common cause of "my sticks feel off" on the Portal — and the long-standing community fix ("same fix since the Odin 1") is to drop sensitivity to around 70%, not to replace hardware.
- Dust or debris inside the stick gimbal — The Hall-effect sensor assembly has a rotating gimbal around the stick stem. Fine dust, pocket lint, or skin flakes can work their way between the stem and the gimbal, creating micro-vibration and erratic readings that show up as jitter or occasional drift, especially when the stick is pushed to the edges. The Portal's open stick wells (no rubber skirts around the base) make this more likely than on controllers with covered stick bases.
- Stale calibration after swapping sticks with compatible parts — The Portal's analog sticks share the same stem as the Retroid Pocket 2S, so many owners swap in replacement sticks, taller caps (like Hype Stix), or Gulikit Hall-effect modules. When you install a new stick, the old stick's calibration data is still stored in the controller firmware — the result is over-correction: the cursor or camera swings past where you aim, or drifts in the opposite direction. Community posts describing "I replaced the sticks twice and still have over-correction" are this exact scenario; the new stick must be recalibrated, not just installed.
- A faulty Hall sensor module from the factory (rare) — A small number of units ship with a defective stick module where the Hall sensor reads off-center no matter what. The telltale sign is the calibration screen refusing to pass: the axis bars show red instead of green, or the stick never reaches the required rotation values. On the Odin 2 line this has been documented in videos and forum threads — when calibration physically will not complete on a brand-new Portal, the module itself is at fault and no amount of sensitivity tweaking will fix it.
How to Fix
- Confirm the drift with the built-in Gamepad Test — Open Settings → Odin Settings → Controller Settings → Joystick Calibration & Gamepad Test, then tap Gamepad Test. Watch the two stick axes while your thumbs are off the sticks: if the crosshair or axis bars sit off-center (or jitter) while untouched, you have real drift. If they return to center cleanly, the "drift" you see in games is sensitivity-related (step 3) or an emulator deadzone setting (step 4). Do this test again after every firmware update — it takes ten seconds and tells you whether the problem is calibration, software, or hardware.
- Run the Joystick Calibration routine properly — In Joystick Calibration & Gamepad Test, tap Calibration and follow the on-screen prompts: rotate each stick in full circles to the outer edge, then hold it dead center until the step completes, for both sticks (do them individually as well as "both" if the option appears). Keep the device on a flat surface and your hands off the sticks when the routine asks for center. If every step turns green, the sticks are recalibrated and drift should stop. If any step stays red no matter how carefully you rotate the stick, skip ahead to step 7 — that is a hardware fault, not a settings issue.
- Lower the joystick sensitivity to about 70% — Inside Gamepad Test, tap the LEFT or RIGHT button for the stick that feels twitchy and choose "Adjust joystick sensitivity". Move the slider down to roughly 70% (the community-standard value since the original Odin; many owners also use it for FPS aiming on the Portal's taller sticks). This removes the micro-input from resting thumbs and makes aiming feel linear instead of jumpy. You can go lower for menu-heavy games or raise it back for shooters — the setting is per-stick, so tune each one independently.
- Set a sensible deadzone in your emulators and games — Even with the sticks calibrated, some emulators ignore the system calibration and read raw values. In RetroArch go to Settings → Input → Analog Deadzone (raise from 0.15 toward 0.25 if you see drift in-game), and in standalone emulators (AetherSX2/NetherSX2, Dolphin, DuckStation) set the analog deadzone to 10–15%. For streamed games, set the deadzone inside the streaming app's virtual controller settings or in the game itself. This is a per-app band-aid that complements — not replaces — the system-level calibration in step 2.
- Clean the stick bases and reseat the caps — With the Portal powered off, blow short bursts of compressed air around each stick stem at an angle to dislodge dust from the gimbal, then gently pull the stick cap straight up and push it back down firmly (a loose cap introduces its own wobble that reads as drift). If a cap feels gritty, wipe the stem and cap socket with a barely damp isopropyl-alcohol swab and let it dry before refitting. Avoid oiling the stick assembly — the Hall-effect module has no lubricated parts that need it, and oil attracts more dust.
- Update the firmware via Odin FOTA — Go to Settings → System → Odin FOTA → Check Version and install any available update (the Portal updates over the air, then reboots automatically). AYN has shipped controller-firmware and calibration refinements in Odin 2 Portal OTAs, and owners who skip updates keep running older, less accurate stick handling. After the update, re-run the Gamepad Test and, if needed, repeat the calibration in step 2 — an update can reset stored calibration values.
- Replace the sticks with compatible parts and recalibrate afterwards — If calibration passes but drift persists across every game, replace the module: the Portal uses the same stick stem as the Retroid Pocket 2S, so RP2S replacement sticks and Gulikit Hall-effect modules fit, and aftermarket caps (Hype Stix) swap straight on. Follow the Portal teardown videos (the stick assembly is on the right side; mirror the process for the left), disconnect the ribbon cable carefully, and install the new module. Critically, after installing ANY new stick you must run the full calibration in step 2 — skipping it produces the "over-correction after replacement" behavior owners keep reporting.
- Contact AYN for a warranty replacement if calibration will not pass — If the calibration screen stays red on a specific stick, or drift is present in the Gamepad Test before and after recalibration, the Hall sensor module is defective and needs service.
