Causes
- The diamond-cut shoulder caps are friction-fit, not clipped — AYANEO designed the Pocket VERT's L1/L2/R1/R2 buttons as angled, "diamond cut" caps that mount on the switch stems. They are intentionally easy to remove so owners can swap them, but the friction fit is loose enough that reviewers report them "pop off a little too easily" — often when pressing at the outer edge of the cap or when the device is pulled from a tight pocket.
- The extreme angle of the caps concentrates force on one edge — The slanted shoulder buttons look sharp and stylish, but pressing near the raised outer edge levers the cap off its stem. Owners on Reddit describe the angle making the buttons "hard to use" and the caps dislodging during normal play, especially in games that require frequent L2/R2 use.
- No retaining lip on the cap underside — Unlike conventional shoulder buttons that have a hook or lip under the shell, the Pocket VERT caps rely on the switch stem alone. Any sideways force — a drop, a knock, pressure inside a bag or the protective case — pops them straight off. The included replacement pair in the box is AYANEO acknowledging this happens in the field.
- Assembly tolerances vary between units — Some units ship with caps that seat more loosely than others because the switch stem height and cap cavity vary slightly per unit. What is merely "wiggly" on one Pocket VERT is "falls off constantly" on another, with no visible defect on either part.
How to Fix
- Reseat the cap squarely onto its stem — Align the cap with the switch stem and press down evenly in the center until you feel it seat fully. Do not press at an angle, which pushes the cap sideways and lets it pop off again. Verify it by gently pressing the button's center a few times; it should click the switch without rocking.
- Use the spare button set from the box — The Pocket VERT ships with a replacement pair of shoulder caps. If a cap keeps popping off or feels loose, swap in the spare and test. If the spare seats tighter, the original cap's cavity was slightly oversized and the spare is the quick permanent fix.
- Check the cap and stem for damage or debris — Remove the cap and inspect the switch stem and the cap's underside with a bright light. Look for a cracked stem, a torn or worn rubber boot, or a piece of lint or plastic flashing inside the cap cavity. Clean any debris with a dry cotton swab and reseat. A cracked stem needs the button switch replaced — contact AYANEO (step 6) rather than gluing anything.
- Press the shoulder buttons in their center, not the edge — Adjust how you press: aim for the middle of the cap instead of the raised outer edge. Center presses push the cap straight down onto the stem; edge presses lever it off. This is the single most effective habit fix for the angled diamond-cut design and costs nothing.
- Remap rarely-used shoulder functions if a cap keeps coming off mid-game — If a specific button (say L2) keeps dislodging during heavy use, open the AYANEO menu (the small vertical oval button on the bottom-left) → Controller and use the L1 L2/R1 R2 Mapping options or Setup custom keys to move that function to a button you press less aggressively, until you can get the cap reseated or replaced.
- Contact AYANEO support for a replacement cap or unit — If caps keep falling off despite reseating, spare-swapping, and center-pressing, contact AYANEO support with your order number and a short video showing the cap popping off during normal use. The shoulder cap fit issue is a known cosmetic-quality complaint on early Pocket VERT units, and AYANEO has shipped replacement caps to owners under warranty. Do not apply glue or tape to the caps — that can jam the switch and void coverage; a warranty replacement is the clean fix.
