Causes
- The full CNC aluminum unibody soaks up and holds heat — The Pocket VERT is milled from solid metal with a glass front, and metal conducts and retains heat far better than the plastic used in most handhelds. Retro Dodo's review puts it plainly: "the metal will stay cold/warm for longer when in use. It's just the sacrifice you make with metal devices." The whole shell becomes a heatsink, so the device feels hot even when the SoC itself is still inside its thermal limits.
- The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 runs hot in a compact chassis — Emulating PS2/GameCube at upscaled resolutions or playing heavy Android games (Genshin Impact, Wreckfest) pushes the 8+ Gen 1 and Adreno 730 hard inside a 20.5mm-thick, 318g body with only a small active fan — there is simply less mass and airflow to shed the heat than in a larger handheld.
- The default fan profile lags behind the heat — Out of the box the VERT runs in Balanced performance mode with the fan on an automatic low curve (the AYANEO menu's fan modes are Off / Low / High / Full / Custom). The fan ramps up only after heat builds, so sustained sessions spend minutes running hot before the cooling catches up — which reads as frame drops and a hot shell.
- Charging while playing — or charging in standby — adds heat on top — The 6000mAh battery warms while fast-charging (the VERT can fully charge in under an hour), and AYANEO System Settings has a dedicated "Charging fan speed when screen is off" option because charging in standby genuinely heats the metal body. Playing while plugged in stacks game heat and charging heat at the same time.
- Sustained heat triggers CPU/GPU throttling — When the internal temperature climbs, the 8+ Gen 1 clocks itself down to protect the hardware. The result is the classic pattern: the game runs fine for the first few minutes, then frames start dropping as temperature rises and the fan maxes out — a real, documented behavior of sustained-load sessions on this device.
How to Fix
- Run the fan ahead of the heat — Open the AYANEO menu (the small vertical oval button on the bottom-left) → Fan Mode and set it to High or Full before starting a demanding game, instead of letting the automatic curve chase the temperature. For the heaviest titles also switch Performance to Gaming or Max so the CPU/GPU are given proper power targets rather than boosting erratically.
- Confirm it's really throttling, not just warm metal — Turn on the FPS Monitor and the CPU/GPU temperature overlay from the AYANEO menu and play for 10–15 minutes. If frame drops coincide with temperatures climbing and the fan pinned at full speed, it's thermal throttling; if the frame rate stays steady but the shell is warm, that's just the aluminum doing its job — no fix needed.
- Set the charging fan behavior in AYANEO System Settings — Open the AYASetting app → Fan Settings and enable/raise "Charging fan speed when screen is off" so the fan cools the battery while the VERT charges in standby. Avoid playing demanding games while plugged in, or drop the performance mode to Eco/Balanced for the duration of the charge — charging heat plus gaming heat is the fastest way to throttle.
- Cut GPU load so the SoC doesn't need to boost — In emulators, lower the internal resolution to 1x–2x native and disable anti-aliasing and heavy shaders; the 60Hz panel cannot show more than 60 FPS anyway, so uncapped frame rates just burn power for nothing. In Android games, cap the frame rate to 60 and reduce graphics quality from Ultra to High if the shell gets uncomfortable.
- Give the fan some airflow — Don't wrap your fingers over the rear vents or play with the device buried in bedding; for long sessions set it down on a desk with the back exposed, or hold it so the intake is clear. A 5-minute break every hour lets the metal unibody shed heat it would otherwise hold for a long time.
- Update the firmware — Open AYANEO System Settings → System Update and install anything with a red Update icon. AYANEO has shipped fan-curve and thermal tuning for the Pocket VERT through OTA updates, and owners who skip updates keep running the original, less refined thermal profile.
