Causes
- The cable between the adapter and monitor is USB 2.0-only — DisplayPort Alt Mode rides on the SuperSpeed pairs plus the SBU sideband pins, which USB 2.0 charging cables simply don't carry. The monitor stays black even though the adapter and host are fine.
- The monitor's USB-C port is data-only, not DP Alt Mode — many monitors have USB-C ports wired for hubs, KVM, or charging that don't accept a video signal. The adapter can't force video through a port the display doesn't expose for it.
- The host port doesn't support DisplayPort Alt Mode — not every USB-C port outputs video. Some laptops only route DP Alt Mode through one specific port (often marked with a DisplayPort icon), and many phones have USB-C ports with no video output at all. The adapter is only as good as the port it's plugged into.
- The monitor isn't on the right input — USB-C monitors label the video input differently (USB-C, DP, or "USB-C DP"). If the monitor is set to HDMI or the wrong USB-C input, you get no signal even with a working chain.
- A marginal SuperSpeed link inside the 90° joint — DP Alt Mode needs all four SuperSpeed pairs and the SBU pins to train. A partially seated head, dirty pins, or a micro-crack in the joint's sharp bend can pass charging and even data while failing the DP negotiation — the screen stays black with no error.
- Wrong orientation or depth of the 2-pack adapter — the Up and Down heads seat the connector at different angles. On some devices one orientation fails DP link training while the other works, especially when a case or bumper stops the head seating fully.
How to Fix
- Verify the host port outputs video at all — check for the DisplayPort icon next to the USB-C port on your laptop, and confirm your phone/tablet supports USB-C video out. If the port has no video capability, no adapter will help — use a port that does.
- Swap the cable for one rated for video — use a USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cable or the cable that came with a portable monitor. It must carry the SuperSpeed pairs and SBU pins; a USB 2.0 charging cable will never show a picture.
- Plug the monitor's cable directly into the host — bypass the adapter entirely. If video works, the adapter (or the adapter-plus-cable combo) is the problem; if it doesn't, check the monitor's input and cable first.
- Select the right input on the monitor — switch to the USB-C / DP input using the monitor's OSD, and make sure it's not in standby. This is the most common "fix" for a black screen on USB-C monitors.
- Fully reseat the 90° head and try the other orientation — push the head in until it clicks, then try the other adapter from the 2-pack (Up vs Down). One orientation can seat the SBU and SuperSpeed pins deep enough to complete DP negotiation.
- Clean the contacts — wipe the gold-plated pins and the female socket with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and blow lint out of the laptop's port. The small SBU pins used for DP negotiation are the first to lose contact.
- Remove hubs and docks from the chain — connect the adapter directly to the host port and the monitor directly to the adapter. Every extra link can break DP Alt Mode negotiation.
