Causes

  • The cable in the adapter's female end is USB 2.0-only — the AuviPal is a passive pass-through: it can only move what the cable plugged into it supports. Phone charging cables and budget cables often carry power plus USB 2.0 data pairs only, so the device either never appears or transfers at 480 Mbps no matter how fast the adapter is rated.
  • The 90° head isn't fully seated in the device port — the SuperSpeed data pins sit deeper in the connector than the power pins. A head that looks plugged in but hasn't clicked fully home connects power first, so the device charges but never enumerates for data.
  • Dirty or oxidized data pins inside the female socket — the adapter lives permanently between your device and your cable, collecting lint and oxidation on its inner pins. The smaller data pins are the first to lose contact while the bigger power pins keep charging.
  • A charging-only or USB 2.0 host port — some laptop USB-C ports (and many tablet and phone ports) are wired for charging and USB 2.0 only. The adapter cannot create data lines the port doesn't expose, so it gets blamed for a port limitation.
  • The wrong orientation of the 2-pack — the Up and Down adapters seat the male head at different angles. On devices with recessed ports (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, phones in cases) one orientation can fail to engage the data pins fully while the other works fine.

How to Fix

  1. Isolate the adapter first — plug your cable and device together directly, with no adapter in the chain. If data works, the problem is the adapter or the adapter-plus-cable combo, not your device's port.
  2. Swap in a known data cable — use the cable that came with an external SSD or phone that supports USB 3.x file transfer. If the device appears, your original cable was USB 2.0-only.
  3. Fully reseat the 90° head until it clicks — pull it out, then push firmly until the aluminum housing sits flush against the device. A half-seated head is the most common cause of charging-with-no-data on angle adapters.
  4. Try the other adapter from the 2-pack — if your current one is the Up orientation, swap to the Down. One orientation seats the data pins deeper in recessed ports and can restore enumeration immediately.
  5. Clean the contacts — wipe the gold-plated male pins and the inside of the female socket with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, then blow lint out of the device's USB-C port. Pay attention to the small inner pins, not just the shell.
  6. Test on a different port or device — move to another USB-C port on the laptop (some are charging-only) or try a phone with file-transfer mode enabled. This tells you whether the port or the adapter is the bottleneck.
  7. Remove any case or thick bumper — cases can stop the 90° head from inserting fully, leaving the data pins unconnected while power still flows. Retest without the case.
