Causes
- Sustained 100W fast charging — pushing 20V/5A through a 12.7 × 19.3 × 8.1 mm aluminum block generates real heat, and the tiny housing has very little surface area to shed it. The adapter running warm-to-hot while your laptop fast-charges at full tilt is expected, not a defect.
- High-resistance contacts from a half-seated head or dirty pins — current flowing through a poor contact converts to heat at the point of resistance (I²R losses). A head that hasn't clicked fully home or an oxidized socket makes the adapter run noticeably hotter while charging slower — the worst combination.
- A cable without a 100W (5A) e-marker — a 60W cable forced to carry higher current heats up at the junction, and that heat radiates into the adapter's female socket. The adapter ends up blamed for heat the cable is generating.
- Blocked airflow around the adapter — the aluminum housing relies on being exposed to open air. Tucked behind a monitor stand, squeezed between a laptop and a desk, or under a blanket, the adapter can't dissipate heat and climbs well past its normal operating temperature.
- Combined load: 40Gbps transfer or 8K video plus charging at once — running DisplayPort Alt Mode or a sustained USB4 transfer while fast charging drives every pin at once, and the small contact area does double duty. The adapter runs warm for the whole session instead of cooling between loads.
- Damaged power path inside the 90° joint — a cracked solder joint or crushed VBUS wire raises resistance dramatically. The adapter gets scorching hot even at light loads, and this is the failure mode that precedes total charging failure or a melted connector.
How to Fix
- Isolate when the heat appears — charge only, transfer data only, then both together. If the adapter only gets warm during a full 100W charge, that's normal operation; if it's hot during light use, you have a contact or damage problem.
- Judge by touch, not alarm — warm-to-touch while fast charging is fine. Too-hot-to-hold for more than a few seconds, discoloration, or a burning smell means stop immediately: unplug the adapter and inspect the contacts before using it again.
- Fully reseat both ends and clean the contacts — push the 90° head in until flush and the cable plug until it clicks, then wipe the gold-plated pins and socket interiors with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Fixing the high-resistance contact usually drops the temperature dramatically.
- Use a genuine 100W E-marked cable — swap in a cable rated 20V/5A. If the adapter cools down, the previous cable was the heat source riding inside the female socket.
- Give the housing room to breathe — keep the adapter in open air, away from desk edges, closed lids, and tight corners. Even half an inch of clearance lets the aluminum fins shed the heat instead of soaking it.
- Stagger heavy loads — pause a large file transfer or video session while the laptop fast-charges, or drop to a lower-wattage charger when you need sustained data throughput. The adapter runs cooler, and so does your device's port.
