Causes
- Display driven below its native 144Hz refresh — the Q27G2 is a 27" QHD VA panel rated at 144Hz, but Windows or the GPU can fall back to 60Hz (or a mismatched rate) after a driver update, a cable swap, or a resolution change. At a low or mismatched refresh the screen visibly redraws and flickers. Many AOC owners find that simply raising the refresh rate until the flicker stops is the whole fix, so this is the first thing to check.
- Loose, bent, or low-bandwidth DisplayPort/HDMI cable — the Q27G2 needs a good DisplayPort (preferred) or HDMI 2.0 link to carry 2560x1440 at 144Hz. A partially seated connector, a kinked or poorly shielded cable, a worn 20-pin DisplayPort cable, or a long adapter chain makes the panel flicker or cut out intermittently, especially when the bandwidth demand is at its maximum in 1440p/144Hz.
- FreeSync (Adaptive-Sync) fluctuation flicker — the Q27G2 supports FreeSync over DisplayPort and HDMI, and on this VA panel the backlight can flicker when the frame rate swings rapidly near the bottom of the variable range (a well-documented behavior of budget FreeSync VA monitors). If flicker happens as the in-game FPS fluctuates, disabling FreeSync in the OSD reliably removes it for many owners.
- MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight — the Q27G2's MBR feature strobes the backlight at the refresh rate to reduce perceived motion blur. That strobe is exactly the kind of visible backlight flicker that many people notice on white or bright screens, and it also dims the image. If flicker appears mainly when MBR is enabled, the feature itself is the cause.
- Incompatible GPU drivers or overlay/screen apps — AOC monitors are known to flicker when an outdated or beta graphics driver conflicts with the panel, or when real-time overlay apps (MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB control software, screen-recording tools) force the desktop to refresh at odd intervals. A clean driver reinstall and closing these apps frequently stops AOC-specific flicker.
- Power delivery issues from an overloaded power strip — the monitor can flicker or dim when it shares a loaded power strip with hungry equipment that drags the supply voltage. Running the Q27G2 directly off a wall outlet or a surge protector with headroom removes this cause.
How to Fix
- Set the native 144Hz refresh rate — in Windows go to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, pick the Q27G2, set the refresh rate to 144Hz at 2560x1440. If a previously configured rate is causing flicker, step down to 120Hz or 100Hz and see whether the flicker stops — that isolates a refresh/cable bandwidth problem. On macOS, confirm the display is running at 144Hz via System Settings → Displays before assuming a fault.
- Reseat and test the cable — power down, remove the DisplayPort/HDMI connector from both ends, check for bent pins, and re-seat it fully (the DisplayPort connector should click into the latch). Use a good, certified cable — preferably the included DisplayPort cable or a VESA-certified DP 1.2+ / HDMI 2.0 cable — and avoid kinks, tight bends, and DP-to-HDMI adapters. Test the other DP/HDMI input on the monitor to rule out a bad port.
- Toggle FreeSync and MBR in the OSD — press the menu/joystick button, open the Gaming menu and switch Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync) to Off, then check whether the flicker stops during gameplay. If it does, you can re-enable it and instead cap the frame rate to a stable value, or leave it off. Also open the overdrive/MBR setting and turn Motion Blur Reduction Off — MBR strobes the backlight and is a direct source of visible flicker and dimming.
- Update or cleanly reinstall the GPU driver and close overlay apps — update to the latest stable driver for your GPU; if flicker persists, use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode to remove it and reinstall fresh. Close MSI Afterburner, RGB-control apps, and screen-recording/overlay tools one at a time to find the one forcing the refresh flicker.
- Power-cycle the monitor and rule out power issues — unplug the Q27G2 from the wall for 30 seconds, then plug it back in directly (or into a surge protector with spare capacity), away from an overloaded power strip. Confirm the panel is not set to a test pattern or in an odd Eco/standby mode via the OSD.
- Factory-reset the OSD and test on another device — from the OSD menu choose the reset option to restore default settings, then connect another PC, console, or laptop. If the monitor flickers at every refresh rate on a known-good cable and a second device, the fault is in the panel/board and the unit should go back under warranty; if it does not flicker, the problem is on the PC side (cable, driver, or GPU output).
