Causes
- The cable in the adapter's female end is USB 2.0-rated — the PowerExpand only passes through what the cable you plug into it supports. A USB 2.0 cable (common with phone chargers and budget cables) carries just power and the low-speed pair, so the whole chain silently runs at 480 Mbps no matter how fast the adapter is rated. Most "my adapter is slow" reports end here.
- A USB 3.0 or 3.1 cable caps the speed below 10 Gbps — even a data-capable cable may be USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) or 3.1 Gen 1, which tops out below the adapter's USB 3.2 Gen 2 rating. The adapter can't invent bandwidth the cable doesn't have.
- The SuperSpeed pairs in the 10cm extension degraded — the four thin TX/RX pairs run through the 90° joint and are the weakest part of the adapter. Repeated bending, crushing, or a hard pull can crack them or raise their resistance. When the laptop can't complete SuperSpeed link training, the pair of devices falls back to USB 2.0 automatically — you get working-but-slow transfers and no error message at all.
- A partially seated head or dirty inner pins — the SuperSpeed pins sit inside the connector and are smaller than the power pins. A head that isn't fully clicked in, or lint/oxidation on those inner pins, makes the SuperSpeed pairs fail link training while power keeps flowing — charging works, speeds drop to USB 2.0.
- The host port or device is USB 2.0-only — some laptops have USB-C ports wired for charging and USB 2.0 only, and older hubs and accessories are USB 2.0 regardless. The adapter is only as fast as the slowest link in the chain.
- A hung USB stack or power-saving driver on the host — Windows can drop a device to USB 2.0 after a failed SuperSpeed re-train (common after sleep or hot-unplugging), and some laptops throttle USB ports on battery to save power — both look like a broken adapter when the hardware is fine.
How to Fix
- Confirm the actual link speed first — on Windows, open Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers and look at your device's properties (or use USBTreeView) to see whether it negotiated USB 3.2 or USB 2.0; on macOS, hold Option and click the Apple menu → System Information → USB, and check the device's speed. This tells you whether the chain is falling back — the root cause of slow transfers.
- Swap in a known USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable — use the cable that shipped with your external SSD (it's rated 10 Gbps) plugged into the adapter's female end. If speeds jump, your original cable was the bottleneck — keep the fast cable for big transfers.
- Fully reseat and clean both ends — unplug everything, push the 90° head into the laptop until it clicks, and push the data cable fully home. Wipe the adapter's pins and socket with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and blow lint out of the laptop port — the small SuperSpeed pins are the first to lose contact.
- Plug the adapter directly into the laptop port — remove hubs, extension cables, and docks from the chain. Every extra connection adds a link that can drop to USB 2.0 and drag the whole chain down with it.
- Restart the computer or reinstall the USB controller — on Windows, Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers → right-click each USB controller → Uninstall device, then reboot (drivers reinstall automatically). On macOS, just reboot. This clears a USB stack that stuck the link at USB 2.0 after sleep or a failed re-train.
- Test on a different port and orientation — try the laptop's other USB-C port (some are USB 2.0-only), and flip the adapter so the cable exits the other way — one orientation can seat the SuperSpeed pins deeper and restore full link training.
- Do the flex test — start a large file copy and gently flex the braided extension near the 90° joint. If the speed collapses or the transfer errors out when flexed, a SuperSpeed pair is cracked inside the extension — a physical failure.
